Sunglow and Albino Cross Genetic

justforfun972 Apr 13, 2010 06:22 PM

Hi Everybody,
First I apologize for my english 'cause I'm French ...

I'm thinking about the genetic transmission of Albino Strain and also Sunglow strain. I read a lot of informations on breeder website and I just would like to clarify some "headached" points so Please, could you confirm or correct those information :

1°- Albino KAHL x Albino KAHL = impossible

2°- Albino KAHL x Albino SHARP = Het that carrying both KAHL & SHARP albino strain

3°- Albino SHARP x Albino SHARP = Albino SHARP

5- If I understand Sunglow are Albino Hypo so they are a form of albinism. I know that many breeder cross Albino with Sunglow and have many success with. It's here that I ask some question. So how does it work with the genetic transmission between Sunglow KAHL and SHARP Strains ? Doest it work like Albino KAHL and SHARP ?

On many website I saw :

Albino x Sunglow = 50% Albino , 50% Sunglow - ok that nice

but

Albino KAHL x Sunglow KAHL ? does it possible ?

Albino KAHL x Sunglow SHARP ? does it work ?

Albino SHARP x Sunglow SHARP ? logically it's possible, right ?

And what about

Sunglow KAHL x Sunglow SHARP = possible result ?

Thanks for your help

Bon jour Sebastien,

>1°- Albino KAHL x Albino KAHL = impossible

It's possible, but many people advise against it. The reasoning is that mating two Kahl albinos seems to be more likely to produce babies with abnormal eyes than mating a Kahl albino to a normal-looking het Kahl albino. So far nobody knows the cause of the problem.

>2°- Albino KAHL x Albino SHARP = Het that carrying both KAHL & SHARP albino strain

Correct. These snakes look normal.

>3°- Albino SHARP x Albino SHARP = Albino SHARP

Correct.

Sunglow is not caused by a single mutant gene. It is a combination of albino (usually Kahl but sometimes Sharp) and hypo (usually salmon). The albino part of the sunglow combination works exactly like the Kahl and Sharp albinos.

The gene pair with the Sharp albino mutant gene is located in one pair of chromosomes. The gene pair with the Kahl albino mutant gene is located in another pair of chromosomes. And the gene pair with the salmon mutant gene is located in a third pair of chromosomes.

Yes, it's possible. The same caution goes for this mating as for Kahl albino x Kahl albino.

Kahl albino x Kahl Sunglow -->
1/2 Kahl albino
1/2 Kahl Sunglow
Most people mean this mating when they write about an albino x sunglow mating.

>Albino KAHL x Sunglow SHARP ? does it work ?

It works. The babies are expected to be
1/2 hypo, het Kahl albino and het Sharp albino
1/2 normal looking, het Kahl albino and het Sharp albino

>Albino SHARP x Sunglow SHARP ? logically it's possible, right ?

The babies are expected to be
1/2 Sharp sunglow (combination of hypo and Sharp albino)
1/2 Sharp albino

>And what about

>Sunglow KAHL x Sunglow SHARP = possible result ?

The babies are expected to be
3/4 hypo, het Kahl albino and het Sharp albino
1/4 normal looking, het Kahl albino and het Sharp albino

It is a bad idea to cross a Sharp albino with a Kahl albino. The babies are perfectly healthy, as far as I know. But such babies will produce Kahl albinos in a Sharp bloodline and Sharp albinos in a Kahl albino bloodline in a few generations.

Hope this helps.
