Back Up Power for Incubators

thunderpaws Apr 14, 2010 11:50 AM

First year with eggs and I have no backup for my incubator in case of power failure. Just wondering what most people are doing for this problem?

Thanks,
Bill

Big time people with a lot of eggs usually have generators or space heaters to heat the room up.
Me...I've got a Reptipro 5000 incubator. It has a car adapter, so I am ok. (Then again, I'm also on the same grid as a hospital, so we never lose power).

There's always those backup batteries for computers too.

I was going to get a UPS Backup until a lot of problems with them surfaced while exploring them. If I use a backup batt, it has to be a true sinewave since I use a proportional thermostat. They cost between 350 and 500 dollars for a minimal one. The cheaper ones have a step wave battery that can overheat the incubator quickly. Also, I am hearing from the companies that make them that if my home voltage drops below 113 V, the UPS can shut down with zero protection at all. I am still looking at options but since I will be doing less than 10 clutches a year, I need to be cautious on how much I can spend on a dependable backup system. Thanks for your reply.

How often do you expect power outages? I mean, are you in a high storm area? Tornadoes? Etc...
Often times having a lot of thermal mass ie. bottles of water in the incubator is enough to hold temps for a few hours.

Hi,

Well, that is really the question? I do live in the front end of Tornado Ally....SouthEast Denver. We get some nasty thunderstorms in spring and during summer. I must tell you we don't get a ton of power outages and they are always short lived. Maybe 5 minutes tops. I just thought it would be nice to have the small outages covered. I do have a very nice surge protector and it should keep everything running during the bad weather. Thanks again for your input, it is always appreciated.

Regards,
Bill

Yeah, if they are only 5 minute power outages, thermal mass containers should be able to keep the temps up without issue.
