Garter Snake "A BIG GULP" - Jax, Fl

amazoa Apr 15, 2010 06:27 AM

It's Spring here in Jacksonville and while putting garbage cans up I noticed this 2.5 foot garter sneaking a meal. We have found lots of these, blacksnakes and red rat snakes on several occasions in our yard. Oh yes a Cotton Mouth as well.--Have a good Spring--Richard

Just amazing to me that a snake that size can eat such a large toad! Did you watch him finish it? Great pics!

Dan,
I was in the Sierra Mtns one Spring and watched a gartersnake swallow an impossibly huge fish the snake caught in a shallow pool. Actually, I left the scene for awhile because the snake was taking so long. When I came back, the snake had finished and was basking in the sunshine at the base of the rock wall near the creek.

So yeah, in nature these animals eat. They don't follow our caresheet advice. Then again, they can warm up to higher temps (or cool down to lower temps) as needed compared to what we typically offer in captivity, so big meals are doable.
