Question for the Florida gang

joecop Apr 18, 2010 08:54 PM

Not a snake question but I am curious. My brother just called me and told me his friend just trapped a black raccoon in his back yard. Has anyone down there seen one of these before is it some rare animal? (west palm beach area of Florida)

Pure one's are getting rarer and rarer now because....well,...you know..same problem just like in our snake hobby, ....can't quit the hybridizing..LOL!

But seriously though,...I don't know the difference between a so-called "Black" Racoon and a normal one, but I can tell you there are countless ZILLIONS of Racoons in Florida everywhere. Could very well be a rarer subspecies, but I don't really know.

doug, before i send that picture on to my daughter (the one who hand-fed two baby raccoons) can you vouch for its authenticity?

DMong Apr 19, 2010 09:00 PM

Well, I didn't take it, but it sure looks like an old authentic photo to me. I think it is actually a pet too, because I see a weird shine around the racoon's neck like it's a collar.

That could also explain the dog just sitting there like it is an everyday occurrence to get hammered by a racoon

I think it is the real deal buddy!

I;ve seen a lot of Racoons here in Florida but I never saw one that was all black. Those things can be down right devils though and may carry rabies, so tell him to be carefull.

Thanks guys and Doug you are killing me with that photo!! LOL. He sent some photos, not what I would call ALL black but strange none the less.

Now lets get back to some snakes!!

I've seen a few roadkills like that. I distinctly remember going back to look at one because it didn't match up with my mental image of a dead raccoon.

joecop Apr 19, 2010 03:48 PM

Thanks. I was just curious. I have never seen one up north like that and figured someone one here from the Fl. area might have seen one.

Joe, Google black raccoon. It appears that someone actually breeds these things (www.keystoneexotics.com)

I have lived in west palm beach all of my life and I have never seen a black racoon. I will leave the jokes alone on this one.
