Respitory ???

rachvan Apr 19, 2010 10:26 AM

I am a new breeder and have about 70 BP, Recently several of them have come down with respitory infections. The first one was a juvinile and I took him to the vet, got the antibiotics, seperated him and put extra heat on him. After about a week, he got better and has resumed eating. Now I have about 8 that are showing symptoms, 3 have died even after giving them antibiotics and the other 5 have been given thier 3 shots but have not improved. I am doing the same thing with all of them, more heat, seperated them from my rack and gave them thier shots. I really hate to loose anymore snake from this, expectially my Pastel Ghost female. Is there something else I should be doing ??? And I have checked the Humitiy in the room as well, It falls between 45 to 65 % . My snakes have thier own room and is heated to 82 to 86 degrees. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what your vet gave you for those shots but I have never heard of just giving 3 im shots of anything , that isn't likely enough. Ususally stuff like what your describing would take at least 6 shots to see good results and most recommend going 2 or 3 more im injections past the point of noticable improvement before stopping the injections to be sure the bug's lost it's hold on the animal.. I'm not a vet and thankfully rarely have issues that are serious enough to require meds but regardless I think I'm pretty close to correct. I'd maybe check with a different vet maybe you'll get better information and correct the problem , the sooner the better it sounds like.

The shots the vet gave me was a double dose for the first shot and reg does 2 more shots every three days. But I will try and make a couple calls to see if I can get some information from another vet. I just ha e used this vet for the past ten years and he's a reptile and bird specialist.
But any other info would be great, thank you !!!

Unlike anthony I have had RI experiences other than humidity and heat are they getting FRESH water at all times? My vet and I have treated several balls for RI (I use to do rescue work with them) each one had 7 shots some had 14 when using 2 different antibiotics together and a few had their RIs come back after treatment we never figured that out but one more round fixed most of them EXCEPT for the one that missed a shot. Good luck getting them healthy again but like anthony said I would highly reccomend at least consulting different vet..

What kind of substrate are you using? Sometimes aspen can give an animal a respiratory problem. I would use newspaper until all symptoms are gone.

Yes I use newspaper for all my snakes. I started with Aspen but it seemed to cause mites as well as breathing issues. I have put all the sick ones in a quarenine room with a helix controler set to 88 to 95 degress and the humidity in the room is 55 to 65 percent. All I can think to do is administer a second round of antibiotics and keep them heated. I've even gotten gloves to handle them so as not to spread it to any other snakes. I also have a mouh wash that I do 2 times a day .

what type of mouth wash are you using on your snakes?

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

At least I'm not the only one that asked. Lol. Fresh water always as well?
