Trying to get started

jt3119 Sep 21, 2003 09:28 PM

Hello, I am new to the Gecko scene and am really interested in starting a breeding colony.
Does anyone have any usefull suggestions on breeds/morphs that are good to start with, I would eventually like to get a "Giant" colony I saw one I think the breeder is from Vegas and the leopards are Huge!!
I have a sweater box that is 3'x 1.5'x 7" I have the heater and hide boxes taken care of so really all I need is a couple of females & a good male to get started but want some that are easy to sale, any suggestions?

Well, first of all, you're all ready and set to buy your pets. Get young juveniles or hatchlings first, so that you can tame them. Juveniles are much cheaper than semi to fully grown adults. Make sure that all the leos you're purchasing are about same size, so that large ones won't harass the small ones. What morph are good to start with, you ask? All of them! Any morphs are good! You just choose which leo has the best coloration that suits you. My favorites are albinos, high yellows and patternless. Then, after you bring your leos home, you can start caring for them. After they become mature, the male will began mating with one of the females, and the eggs will be laid. From here, you'll start your own collection of leos, and new color morphs may form. Good luck, and have fun.

If you don't have any shows coming up soon, a good place to start is our very own Classifieds. A lot of breeders offer lots, so you could probably find some good deals on there, or follow the links to see what else they have available on their websites.

If you want to have versatility with one male you might want to consider getting male combines several traits, even if some of the traits are just het. What you get depends on your budget, and you like personally. My advice is to decide what you persoanlly like best, what you think is beautiful, and focus on/work towards that.

Some morphs are not compatible though, for example there is no sense in getting jungles or stripes and patternless together, as patternless is a recessive trait that will cover the jungle if expresessed heterozygously. However you can combine patternless with tangerine (selective bred trait) or albino (recessive trait) or both. There are three genetically different kinds of albinos- Tremper, Rainwater/Vegas, and Bell.

You could, for example, get a male patternless het albino, and a female albino het patternless. You would likely get patternless, albinos, double hets(looks normal, het for both traits) and some patternless albinos. Patternless albinos are easy to sell at the right price, and prices are still fairly high for those.

There are also Blizzards, Hypos, Melanistic, and snow leos. Look around and see what you think is beautiful, and go from there. One word of caution though, if you get into breeding, do it because you love it...don't count on making a profit. You might, you might not, and you might just break even—but if you do it because you love it, you win no matter what happens, beacuse you get to enjoy the hobby.
