Mites - how the ...

I have been keeping monitors for almost 20 years and I have never had mites - so I have never had to deal with them. I was gone for a week, returned home and found mites running around on my dumerils and in the cage. I only have this one 18 month old reptile and have no idea where they came from.

The last thing I added to the cage was some dirt 2 or 3 months ago, but that has never contaminated my terrarium before. Does anyone have safe effective ways to terminate these little guys?

Are they for sure mites? Currently, what are they doing in your cage? Are they focussed around eyes and ears of your monitor, and walking all over him? OR are they around the cage, in the soil and eating leftover food and poop?

If they aren't 'bugging' your animal, they are decomposers(springtails)there to help you with some extra waste. They also help breakdown leaves and soil as well.

If they are really bothering your monitor, you're going to just have to do a good cleaning. replace and soak everythiing in hot water.

thanks - I forgot to come back and check for help cause I haven't been able to find another bug.I think you were right and I probably jumped the gun. They were very small, clear little bugs crawling all over him, but now they are gone. thanks for your response.
