Need help with possibly eggbound snake!

christoph42 Apr 19, 2010 10:32 PM

Heya guys, my name is Chris. My first post here, but I've owned Hogs for a few years now, and I think I need some help from more experienced keepers/breeders. My Albino female appears to be, from what I can tell, eggbound. Although I've had hogs for a few years, this is the first time I have bred a pair. I have a huge albino female. She is 3 years old, and this is her first breeding. She was somewhere over or around 275g when she bred. She has always been a great eater. I put her with a year old male and they instantly locked up, almost right in front of me. Anyway, over the weekend she laid ONE slug, and there is clearly an egg about a quarter inch from the vent. It has been almost exactly 48 hours since the slug. She also hadn't eaten when offered for the past few weeks. After I noticed the egg, I tried to feed her and she ate 4 nice, healthy size, rat pinks/fuzzies. Soaked her in a bath also, and tried to gently massage the egg a bit, but this was all last night, and it is still in that same spot today. Any thoughts?

Hi,

I can only go off experience but I had a Mexican Black King that became egg bound on her first lay. After spending nearly £200 on vets fees, she had to have a hysterectomy due to several prolapses (casued by pushing against a blocked exit).

She can no longer breed. I would expect that you have the albino hog to breed her and so would suggest the vets asap. The sooner she is unblocked, the less chance of prolapse, the less chance of hysterectomy.

Sorry dude

What type of nest spot are you offering??? With experience in varanids and other species of snake, if the conditions in the the nest box are not correct, they will hold the eggs and can become egg bound...

Put a little mineral oil up vent and see what happens. If that doesn't work, the good news is eggs is right near vent...If you know what your doing, you can asperate egg with a syringe, and pull it out with tweezers. If you know what your doing. But wait a bit after you put in mineral oil and see if it comes out on own. Best bet is getting a vet or someone who knows what they are doing to do this. Mike B.
