Newbie question

harpy Apr 20, 2010 10:09 AM

Hi all,

My 8 yr old son has a young Corn Snake (have had it about a year) and also a young (had it maybe 7 months) Cal Kingsnake. The corn is housed in a 20g long with a clipped screen top.

The Cal is in a small, temporary outfit - one of those plastic "terrarium" type things from the pet store that has a fastened, ventilated top.

I could easily just go get a similar setup to what the Corn is in for the Cal, but here are some of my considerations:

1) Space - very limited, may be nice to stack.
2) Cost - looks like a new Vision Cage setup appropriate for these 2 snakes would run me about 600 bucks at a minimum.
3) Wife - see both of the above; she is not a fan of snakes in general and it was a minor miracle we were able to get her to agree to a Corn. The Corn has been so great, we were able to add "ONE more" to the collection and my son chose the California Kingsnake. In MY mind, I'd love to add a couple more in the coming years, so being efficient with space is important.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Greg L.

Several things.
Vision's model 221 isn't that pricey and is more than enough for most corns/kings.
Be careful with sliding glass doors and baby snakes. They can get through the gaps at times. Wait until they've started to bulk up a bit.
Visions aren't the only cages out there. Animal Plastics, Reptile Basics and Boaphile are three off the top of my head that offer a variety of sizes of stacking cages. Of them, I've liked AP the best for bigger cages, but haven't used them for the smaller cages (just haven't needed one).

rubbermaid/sterilite containers make great light wieght snake enclosures and can be heated from underneath. they make them in all sizes some identical to 20 gal long aquarium. just drill some small air holes or big ones with screen covering and make sure flemsy lid is secure all around.

Consider the Visionarium, which is a more functional 20Gal long glass cage that is stackable even when heated. Search for it on the web. LLL Reptiles has them, as do others. They ship pretty cheap because you assemble them.

Look in the Classifieds on kingsnake.com in the Cages section. Take your time and look around. Boamaster, Boaphile, Repti-Racks, Reptile Basics, Animal Plastics, PVC Cages just to name some of what you will see. All make racks too.

You will see used cages/racks too. I would caution against buying used racks unseen. A picture or at least a very accurate description is a must.

Mark named it first, Visionarium was the first thing that i thought of. i was going to get some for myself a few years ago but i decided to get into boas and build my own... i actually still might get a couple if i end up getting a manderian rat snake or a grey banded king

they look easy to assemble, vent through the corner posts, same size as a 20L, sliding glass doors, stackable, they can be heated with under tank pads and or heat lamps without affecting the stackability.

and now i dont know this for sure because i never really paid attention to prices on the smaller cages but... i dont think you will find a comparible sized cage for less (again i dont know that for sure). the plastic cages tend to run a little more and i dont know what Jeff the boaphile has for smaller malamine boxes

I agree that the price (shipped) for a Visionarium - a lockable, stackable, bottom or top heated cage - is hard to beat. They even sell a top-mounted screen with ceramic lamp socket. Super easy to assemble and disassemble the cage too.
