Argentine Boa

BPfanatic Apr 22, 2010 03:56 PM

I've read their care is similar to a BCI. I've also read that they tend to get larger than a BCI. Is that true or do most stay within a 7-9 foot range if fed on a normal feeding schedule?
Any pictures of your argentine are welcome! I just love the look of the contrasting colors on them.

Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks,

I would say most of them will stay within 7-8 ft with normal (slow)feeding schedule, altough they tend to grow bigger than some other subspecies and localities (especially the Central American ones). However, I truly believe that most boas in captivity are overfed and that's the main reason why some boas can get 9-10 ft in length.
Don't misunderstand, 10 ft long Argentine females are far more common than 10 Ft long Central Americans, for sure.

All the best,
Adam

Thanks for the reply!

What exactly is a "slow" feeding schedule? Feeding like every 10 days instead of 7?

Once again, thanks for the reply

Well, babies in my care eat every 7-10 days. Adults usually eat 3-4 weeks. I'm offering moderate sizes preys (preys that are noticable after the swallow, but don't set back the snake in movement or coiling up).
There are not too many stats on feedings in the wild, but if you can imagine a snake that is often searching for food weeks long without any success and even when they do, they will spend the next 1-2 weeks hidden until they digest and then they will have to find a prey again, you can easily recognise that "feeding a baby boa every 7 days at the same time, like clockwork" is everything but not natural. I believe in moderate feeding and I am considering it as a key of success in both keeping and breeding Boa constrictors.

Best wishes,
Adam
