leftover eggs? Help!

bytheshore1 Apr 23, 2010 06:05 PM

My female Hypo Brooksi layed 13 eggs yesterday. She appeared weak and it looks like she still has at least a couple eggs in her. I waited till today to see if she was going to finish. Any suggestions on how to get her to push the others out. Not so much worried about the eggs. Just want her to be all right. Help!

females Florida kings are very weak after they lay. they usually don't even have the strength to eat until a couple days after.

I would have palpitated the eggs out but since she is already past that stage of her vent being dialated. i would just wait it out. feed her several mice and see if she will pass the eggs on her own.

You can always palpitate the eggs out when she gets her strength back. But is is a tedious process and unless you have experience if could just be a lot of stress on her for nothing...

..what happens is a layer of skin is keeping the eggs from coming out the vent. The tissues get swollen and wrap aroung the front of the eggs. usually with a large clucth like with what you had..

So it is best to wait until all the swelling of the tissues goes down and see if she will pass them on her won. usually in the next two weeks.

About 50% of the time, the female passes the eggs on her own.

Yeah a friend of mine had a Cal King that retained two eggs. He eventually got bored with snakes and gave his entire collection to me. The snake bred the following year and passed those old eggs too. Bill Love had success using a large needle to pierce the snake at a safe place and the eggs also to suck the yolk out so the snake could pass them easier. But I agree with Rainer and prefer to let the snake pass them on her own. Now I have seen snakes die from retained eggs also. I know this sounds like mixed signals but just want you to be awate of the situation. I just leave them and feed them a lot and hope they pass on their own. I have one right now that has some eggs from last year and she eats like a pig, so I am hoping she will pass them with some good eggs too. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice. I will give her some time. I dont think she will have an issue with feeding. She is a monster on the rodents. she is moving around today better than yesterday so will try and feed her tomorrow. Thanks again, Tim
