Canadian Bulls Breeding

BBBruno Apr 24, 2010 11:21 AM

After what has been a few very good years for me but not my animals I had a new hibernaculum constructed last fall and it got quite cold, which I had hoped for. The results speak for themselves as the Canadian Bulls are breeding as I write this post; I also witnessed overtures among the Eastern Fox and Oregon Cals. The collection is in its fourth room in as many years, but with this one being permanent I hope this is a start to the animals returning to normal after a few crazy years. Hopefully Pines will breed later, European Pituophis next year. Many have asked me about the Canadian Bulls over the years; hopefully this union will prove successful, I'll monitor the progress in the coming weeks.

"European Pituophis" is a term I like to use to describe Rhinechis scalaris, the Ladder Snake.. Their head and rostral are very suggestive of Pituophis, and even have a cartilaginous filament at the base of the glottis like Pituophis (though greatly reduced in size), and their hissing is prominant as a result. Though an ocean away I view them as much more Pituophis-like than some snakes included in the genus, most notably deppei and lineatcollis; personally I think Fox Snakes are closer to Pituophis than either of those two, and the finding of two "Bullfox" hybrids last year makes it even more intriguing.

Thanks Bart, I had the same question about "European Pituophis" so I looked it up and found a nice photo

from this web page.

Hey Dan, nice bull there but I can't quite make out what's going on with the face. How about a closer look?

Hey Bart,
This is great news, and congrats on the progress thus far. I am excited to hear more about the Eastern Fox snakes as well. Truly a spectacular collection as always.
Looking forward to our next conversation.
Cheers for now,
--Brian
