NC Foothills Trip 4-24-10...BIG eastern!

westernNC Apr 25, 2010 08:53 AM

Woke my son up early yesterday and headed SW to hit a few tin sites just as the sun was coming up. We had a great morning, finding 8 snakes which represented five different species. This was the highlight of the day though...I lifted a 10x10 side of a fallen barn and looked underneath to see a big eastern king. My hands were full holding up the heavy barn, so our only shot of securing the big eastern for photos was my six year old son making the grab. He pulled this monster out on his own. This pic was taken moments afterward. Awesome experience for both of us!

We also found a nice mole king, our second live one and third overall for 2010.

Thanks for looking,
Michael

are pretty variable. Here are a few old pics from the past couple of years. You guys may have seen these on here before.

I will post the recent ones on here in the next couple of days. We have found three so far this spring, two under tin and a dor. They are much more common in my neck of the woods than corns or eastern kings.

Here ya go...

The second and third were found under the same piece of A/C in May 2006. The first one was from the NC foothills about two weeks ago.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks John. They are much like Thayeri in their variability, maybe more so in the foothills than the sandhills or coast. I have found a green mole with orange blotches (above) and a red mole under the same board before. I have also found grey ones, brown ones, clearly patterned adults, patternless adults, etc.

I will take some better pics of the pink one this weekend.

Thanks,
Michael

I have some nice pics from this spring...corns, moles, scarlet kings, scarlet snake, etc...that I will post as soon as I have time to compress them. Here are a couple easterns from last year for you guys to enjoy while you wait, with a photo of a nice tin site that produces nice foothills eastern kings.

Thanks for all the kind words.
