TORTOISE HERPESVIRUS INFECTION

PHFaust Sep 21, 2003 11:20 PM

Ok I need assistance here. I have a russian that may or may not be a carrier of the Tortoise Herpes Virus. Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this.

The russian I have was housed with a male that went to a special needs rescue as a last hope. Infortunatly he was euthanized due to the severe health issues. The female i have is a little small but did not have any other health issues...

Thanks for all who can help. This is something that is way over my vets head.

Russian tortoises are another one of those tortoises that are notorious for carrying Herpes Virus. Unfortunately the more you learn about it the more frustrating it will get. If you are going to put together a group, keep WC with WC and treat them all as if they are carriers. If you want to add CBs to the mix understand there is a risk but it is not a given.

I only have one other tort and that is a cb leo tort. Both were going to be separate. Just kinda looking for more info. As I said the mate to the one i have was in HORRIBLE condition so could be anything from diet to herpes. From what I have understood this is something that is transmissible by direct contact and not air. That is the one question I really am looking for answer to.
Thanks

So far... my experience is through direct contact. I've had quite a few examples in my collection but the on form was through direct contact. There is a great amount of debate on this though.
There is also a good amount of debate as to if it can go from one species to another.
