Question on vision racks and heat

ltownmorphs Apr 25, 2010 02:50 PM

I have vision 4 ft and 3ft cages and plan on switching to a rack system. My snake has its own heat source and is normally around 82-84 year round. I am leaning on visions cb 70 and large boa racks. I was wondering about their ventilation and the use of heat cable. Is there to much ventilation. Right now i have flex watt and love it. I use the wide stuff for my boa females. Does enough cable come with the racks and does it warm a large enough area for gravid boas.

Thanks
Mark Thompson

Too much ventilation: No

Heat cable: Doesn't come with the racks unless you have made that arrangement. So, you can purchase as much as you need and snake it through the grooves in the shelf.

Heat cable can easily heat a big snake - it all depends on 1) how much you use and 2) how close you have the cable traces to one another. Of course the ambient temp in the room drives how much heat cable you will need.

Below is what I used under some plastic tubs to heat young boas. The cable runs are closest together on one end for more heat, and gradually widen from there. The room was very cool in Winter, and this is the setup for that. This avoided the all or none syndrome - hot over the heater but cold everywhere else. With the heat cable traces, there were more choices.

What I like about heat cable is that it is gentle enough watt/foot wise but still does the job even in a cool room.

Well I would think it would warm enough of the tub for a gravid boa.. but ive always used the wider heat tape like the stuff your using for your boas now. As far as ventilation, I believe they have vents in them so that should be pretty suitable. We use either the 3" or the 11" heat tape on our racks. Feel free to check them out.

I know this post is a little older, but if you order the racks directly from vision http://www.visionproducts.us/ they come with the heat cable. I picked up last week the 15/32 qt rack and keep it in a room with an ambient of 70-74, the heat cable is keeping a good hot spot and ambient in the tubs.
