death in collection... what to do

sanchezk Apr 25, 2010 04:20 PM

I recently purchased a Het Red Axanthic, approximately 2 months ago. He acclimated well and took his first 3 rats, then went into shed and didn't eat. After the shed he refused his feedings for the past couple weeks. Today, feeding day, I open his tank to find him deceased. My snakes are kept in an ARS rack with a Spyder robotics herpestat keeping their hot spot at a constant 90 degrees. My question is does anyone know how much it would cost to have an autopsy done to try to find out the cause of death?

I would recommend calling around to local reptile vets to get price quotes. You might also want to check with the local University, as many of them have a Herpetologist on staff who might be willing to help you.

First of all be certain to have the body in the frig and not the freezer. It will cost about $200 . Do you have a major university anywhere close? Often they will have a vet school to do this cheaper. Where are you located?

So sorry for your loss. Sounds like you kept the animal in good conditions. I would want to know too.

So sorry for your loss. Ditto on keeping it in the Fridge, Not the Freezer, as the previous poster said. I'm very lucky, I have a fantastic reptile vet who does necropsys for free on exotics. I've never had one done on a snake but he did one on my Iguana and on my Bullfrog for free. I hope you can find a vet that would do it free or cheap.

Depends on how extensive you would like the necropsy to be. I paid 500 to have one done. But that was on a two year old snake that I had for 2 months and forked over 7500 bucks for. I paid for the most complete examine I could get to try and find out what happened to it. I believe a basic one runs around 200 though.
