Too much UVB???

reptilesrock Apr 25, 2010 04:47 PM

Hello everyone,

I just finished buying a new 24 inch flourecsent UVB bulb for my beardy cage. My cage is a melamine cage with some ventilation on each side. However, the bulb I got said on the package that it was recommended for screened terrariums and that the screens will help to filter out UVB rays. Since my cage does not have the screens on top, does this mean my beardy will be getting too much UVB accumulated in the cage??? I'd appreciate your opinions and advise.

Depends on the height of the enclosure where the bulb is mounted.

Offer shady retreats as they are opportunistic sun worshipers.

in the wild they will bask for awhile, retreat, bask some more, retreat. They need some shady areas to self regulate.

Additionally...

Dragons have thick outer dermis layers that are nearly opaque, therefore they need intense uvb.

They require more uvb than most reptiles.

Do some searches and reading on it.

You don't have to worry about too much UVB from any fluorescent bulb...usually the opposite is true. Strange that the package mentioned that the screen would help reduce the amount. That is usually a problem that cause too LITTLE UVB to get through.

What bulb did you buy? Brand, UVB %, etc.

It is 10.0 UVB and I don't remember the brand name.

It's probably Zoo-Med...even if you threw out the box it's usually printed on the tube itself. You can't get too much UVB from those.

I use Zoo Med Reptisun 10.0's inside all of my cages. A fine screen filters out 50% of the UVB, so I think they were saying you must use a 10.0 if the UVB has to pass through a fine screen.

About the only risk with the 10s is if your dragon is within an inch of the bulb itself...But more due to the UV-Index rating at that close to the bulb..than too much UVB rays itself.

Mount the light about 8-12" above the basking area and you don't have anything to worry about.

Unless this is a compact bulb type florescent light. Some of these kinds of bulbs have caused issues in the past...
