MASSIVE BLACK RHINO

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Apr 26, 2010 03:24 PM

This is Samson my new MASSIVE male Rhino. He belonged to a close friend of mine for over 10 years and was on public exhibit. I finally talked him out of it and paired him with two females I've never been able to find compatible males for. The one female is a massive 4' girl which I could never get a male to dominate and the other just plain seemed to dislike any other Cyclura I put her with. I have two males who are big enough to be dominate to the bigger female but both are paired up. Samson immediately became the king of his castle and both females are now kept in line. This male is about 53-55" long and although I haven't weighed him I'm guessing he's over 35 lbs. In the pic you can see the 4' female and compare size. The only others I've seen this large has been in the DR. Anyway I'm very glad to have him and hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoy him...

He already allows me to scratch him but Patty is still a bit wary and well she should be with this one. That is why she's a bit in front and to the side of him which in the pic makes him appear smaller in size. Thanks for the kind words...

He is super awesome! How much do your adult females weigh?

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Apr 27, 2010 07:04 AM

Most of my females are in the 15-18 lbs size. I do have 3 monster females each pushing 4' long and weighing 20 lbs plus....thanks

Good looking male Tom I would love to see a close up picture of his head.

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Apr 29, 2010 07:55 PM

With me he's now standing up waiting to be scratched and beginning to follow me in his cage. The day I took the pic with Patty he took a swipe at her with his tail which is unusual but means stay away in Cyclura language so that's why she's in front of him. This, of course, makes him look smaller. Tomorrow I think I'll be able to get a finite length and if I don't have to manhandle him I'll get a weight as well. He is the largest Rhino I've ever had the pleasure of having here as a guest. The big one I call Fred and some of you call Jordan is significantly smaller and he's a BIG boy. Also this one is very BLACK, REALLY BLACK IN FACT....

That's a very nice iguana. I would really like to know his length. He's not going to like being weighed, but if you could put him in a cloth bag and weigh him just once on an accurate scale, that would be an interesting statistic. Most of the biggest of big monster cornuta that I have had the opportunity to weigh have been in the low 20lb+ range. Note the lower foto was the biggest rhino iguana I photographed at Zoodom, and I did not get to weigh him.

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD May 02, 2010 10:25 AM

I've always thought that pic of you holding that magnificent cornuta was a fabulous one. Samson is bigger than the one you're holding but I believe I saw some as lg. as Samson in the DR and in fact perhaps larger. It's just hard to guess exact lengths and weights. I'm going to make an attempt today to accurately measure and weigh Samson. The one I call Fred [Jordan to you guys] is 45" long exactly and Samson is noticably larger. Fred is a lg. cornuta himself but doesn't have that unreal nuchal crest like the one you're holding. He is truly a classic cornuta and I love the pic....The problem with accurate anything with Samson is that he allowws you to scratch him and in fact desires it but only on his terms and times. I'm winning his trust slowly but surely and do not want to invade his privacy to the point he distrust me. I did get an exact measurement on the big female in the pic and she's right at 43" long and is massive for her size.
