My new BTS

HoodedHoy Sep 22, 2003 12:33 AM

I got my skink (a gigas) on the last day of August. I just downloaded some pics and put two in the photo gallery here. He had mites and I treated him with Natural Chemistry's Reptile Relief, now most of them are gone but I need to treat him again to get rid of the last few. He's doing quite nicely besides that and has loved the snails I've been bringing in from the garden. One problem though, the skin on his feet won't come off. All of the rest shed fine, but it isn't coming off his feet and he won't hold still to let me remove it. He gets ticked when I try. Any suggestions? I got Jerry Walls book and found that I knew most of the things in it from here. Thanks for your help so far everybody, it's great to have the forum here to look to.

Where did you buy your BTS from? Was it Xtreme Reptiles? I ask because I was thinking about buying a baby Gigas from them now or in the future, but if their babies have mites on them I'll have to pass.

If you don't want to violate any forum rules by committing libel against Xtreme Reptiles, you can e-mail me at f389602@bbtel.com with your answer instead. Thanks.

Actually Extremereptiles is a good place to do business with. I feel like an a$$ because i can't remember his name but he is good about handling situations. I had an animal die of natural causes and he took care of it and didn't ask me to freeze it and send it back or take 10 photos or say "sorry but it happened after our 10 minute return policy" lol.
Dang i still can't get his name..

Do you know if they offer CB baby Gigas BTS every year? I know they get shipments of adult WC every year so I figured they do offer CB as well. I asked them that question in an e-mail in a series of questions but they forgot to answer that particular one.

It wasn't Extreme. I got him from some people out of Palm City Florida, and they seemed very nice. But I'm a bit puzzled about when he got the mites. I took a real close look at him before I got him but I still might not have seen the mites, or maybe he was exposed to them at the show somehow. And I was thinking maybe some were hiding in the bedding I put him on that I hadn't used in about a year, but I don't know if they can live for a long time without food like ticks can.
Mites are a hassle, but I don't really judge these guys by this, I might have gotten them on me from some other animal I looked at that day and he's quite healthy otherwise.
I wish I had been able to find an Eastern though, I think they're the prettiest.

I found that rubbing some vitamin e oil or mineral oil on their feet after a soaking helped coax any remaining scales off.
