Old Indigo photo

DMong Apr 27, 2010 03:26 PM

LOL!!,....

Here is an old pic of me(on the right)holding one of my Indigo's with my older brother. This pic was taken at my grandmother's house in Coral Gables in Miami in April 1971. I wasn't even quite eleven in this pic(one more month)..LOL!

Hard to believe I even had snakes several years before this was taken!

What great times those were!

Doug,

Weren't they already protected then? Or was that later? Not that as kids we cared too much about those kinds of rules in the 70's.

Matthew

DMong Apr 27, 2010 08:40 PM

LOL!,...yeah, you're right about kids not caring much about rules or laws back then, but they actually became formally protected as threatened under the "Endangered Species Act"
in 1978, so that was 7 years after that photo was taken.

Lucky for you! LOL
Even then, I never saw one offered for sale, though I always read rave reviews of their pet potential. But it seems those reviews never met an ACTUAL Indigo.
Oh well, back when I was a teen in Barstow, Ca. I carried the occasional baby tortise home. Never kept them, I usually released anything I caught in those days. But man, I wouldn't try that today! Also, because I'm better informed too..

LOL!,...yeah, I hear ya man!

Some older kids in the neighborhood that knew I was into snakes came to my house one day with a GIGANTIC MONSTER Indigo about eight and a half to nine feet long that they wanted to sell me. They wanted $8 whole dollars for this gargantuan monster serpent!!!!!!

Unfortunately, I wasn't doing real great as far as my school grades went, so no matter how I pleaded with my mom to buy it for me and I would pay her back, she simply would not. So I had to watch those two kids walk off into the sunset with that monster behemoth Indigo draped over both their shoulders with it's tail barely clearing the ground.

Yes, that was truly one of the saddest days as a kid that I can remember!..LOL!

That was definitely the largest Indigo I have ever seen in my entire life!

Wow Doug, that must have been in the old days. You never see them that big now, sad to say.
My mom would have simply fainted if she saw that big guy!
I saw a small Eastern in Florida back in 1993. My roommate & I were out board flipping in a hidden lot, when we uncovered the oddest looking Southern Racer. Big fat one with a red throat. Good thing he got away down a mole hole! I don't want to think of the fine!

DMong May 01, 2010 03:20 PM

Yeah, that thing would have made the most seasoned herper's eye's bulge out!..LOL!

That Indigo you guys ran across sounds like a real beauty with the nice red throat and all!

Glad you guys had the experience to at least SEE one now days in the wild.

Yeah, too bad I acidentally gave away the locale ( not sure how, but some one found out) & the habitat was destroyed. Ignorant morons. Of course, that area is either Condos or a Parking lot by now. Florida population growth is UNREAL.
It was a beauty, for sure. Only one I've ever seen.

LOL!!!,..yeah, is that funny stuff, or what man?? ..HAHAHAA!

I think I will finally enlarge this pic soon and frame it. I didn't even know this photo existed until my aunt was going through some stuff after my mom passed away in 2006, and wanted me to have it. Very glad I DO have it too.......priceless man!

Glad you liked it Dave!

Awesome stuff Doug!

Not quite an Indigo but I remember there was a picture of me at about the same age showing off a stiped cal king to some family and friends. I'd love to see that now. Maybe one of my siblings has it?

Yeah man!. When they were taken way back in the day, they don't mean a whole lot, but now it is simply priceless to look back at this stuff and dwell in the fond memories as a young kid.

Where the heck else could this stuff be more appreciated by anyone than on these snake forums??. If these were shown to just anybody else in the general public, it wouldn't even raise an eye brow at all. It would be like.........eew gross!, a kid holding a black snake of some kind.

Hope you can locate that old Cal. king photo and post it one day man, I would LOVE to see it, and I know others here would too!

"yea I have 4 gravid females so far.Not sure what I'll do with 4 clutches of gentilis"

Who are you kiddin' man??, you will do just like ALL of us do with all the clutches we produce,....worry about which best looking one's to KEEP!!, then do whatever you have to do to sell/give away the rest..LOL!

It's a vicious cycle of snake "sickness", but inevitable just the same.

Out of four gentilis clutches, I am am quite sure we will all see future posts of your killer holdback's, not to mention some other nice stuff you have that will be dropping for you..HAHAHAA!

Some pretty cool nostalgia there, Doug! That animal looks pretty large, too!

-Cole

DMong Apr 28, 2010 12:34 PM

Thanks Cole!,....

Yeah, I just LOVED it when my aunt first showed me this pic back in late 2006!.

It was probably around 5 feet or so I guess in that pic, but the fact that I was so young probably also helped make it look bigger too.

The eight to nine foot specimen that some kids brought to my house one day to sell me for $8 whole dollars around 1971-72 was an absolute MONSTER BEAST!!!. The largest one I have ever seen in my entire life to this very day!

Man Doug, it's all YOUR fault!

HA!

I would love to see one of those beauties in the wild!

DMong Apr 29, 2010 10:20 PM

LOL!!,...Yeah, well, I only had about 4 or 5 in my entire life, and the last one I owned was around 1976, so it is doubtful I put even a small dent in them..LOL!

I did however get a big female Indigo from a friend in my old neighborhood that had one not too long after that('77 or so), and he said he couldn't get it to eat at ALL no matter what he did, and that it was as mean as the devil himself!

Well, turns out she was gravid with a bunch of eggs, and I hatched most of them. I kept one hatchling for myself, gave him the female back which started to feed again along with a couple of the young, and let the rest go in the woods close by.

Man!, those things looked like freakin Ball python eggs bro!..LOL!

BTW, give me a ring man!,...it's "boot knockin' time" here in a couple days when some stuff sheds!, things are starting to get good and active!
