Better odds for Pastel SS question

LucaDG Apr 27, 2010 05:19 PM

HI all,

by breeding a Psatel yellow belly to a Specter Pastel will I have better odds hitting the Pastel super stripe than crossing a pastel yellow belly to a super stripe???
Thanks a lot
Luca

With the Pastel Yellow Belly to the Pastel Specter you could be extremely lucky and produce a Super Pastel Superstripe but you could also be extremely unlucky and produce all Normals. With the Pastel Yellow Belly to Superstripe every baby would at the very least be a Specter or a Yellow Belly and if you are just somewhat lucky you should produce a Super Stripe and or an Ivory and with a little more luck a Pastel Superstripe and or a Pastel Ivory. Personally I go for the Super every time so I say the odds are better with the Pastel Yellow Belly to Superstripe. I hope my rambling makes sense to you. LOL

How rude of me not to post a few pictures of my Superstripe breeding a Pastel Yellow Belly! LOL

Why wouldn't there be a possibility of normals? The SS can produce both Specters and YB, but I don't think they would all have to be one or the other. I agree that this would be the safer of the two breedings. It all depends if you want to dream big, a super pastel SS male would be a powerful breeder. Mike

According to all of the breeders I have talked to that have much more experience with Superstripes than me the Superstripe is the "Super" form you get when you combine Yellow Belly and Specter (both alleles of the same inc-dom gene); hence they can only produce either Yellow Belly’s or Specters no Normals. That is also why a Superstripe can't reproduce itself like a Pewter or a Bumblebee can.

I knew the SS can't reproduce itself. I never heard of the other though. I thought it was kind of like a mojo & lesser type of super. That can't reproduce itself, it can only make mojo, lessers and normals too. I hope it is true about the SS, I have an adult male. YB's are strange, anything could happen with them.
Thanks Mike

Mike a Superstripe is the same as a Mojave and Lesser “Super”; which would be a Blue Eyed Leucistic. If you breed the Blue Eyed Leucistic to a Normal every baby would be either a Mojave or a Lesser, no Normals. Cool huh? The other great thing about the Superstripe is because they can’t reproduce themselves they will hold their value longer.

That is all true Albey. I think I have a female Super Stripe gravid now to my Pastel Ivory. She's one of the lightest perfect striped Super Stripes out there and is from my original Whirlwind so the wait is killing me. Might be interesting if all goes well !

Hey thanks Albey. I could use a little luck with that clutch, she's an 07 about 2000 grms now (about 1400 in that pic of her taken last summer) and this is her first attempt at breeding so that always worries me a little.

Take care

so if you were to breed a superstripe to a yellow belly, EVERY baby would be either a yellow belly or a spector?
so no chance of normals?
im having a hard time understanding the super stripe genes for some reason. please explain
