Trans Pecos breeding size

jamesalternafan Apr 27, 2010 07:53 PM

I was wondering if anyone knows a rough minimum weight to try and breed my female? I would say she looks pretty good to go but would rather wait a year instead of pushing her this year. She is about 300 grams but the male I have for her makes her seem small.

Does anyone have some experience trying to breed smaller females?

Thanks,
James

I was hoping someone with TP experience would answer your question. I am raising a pair of 08s right now and have never bred them. Reflecting on what adult females from friends collections look like, I would venture to guess they should at least be 36 inches long. Not sure what a comparable length female corn would weigh, but probably in the 300-500 gram range. Once again, not 30 inches, 32 inches, etc., but a solid three feet long. There was an article on TPs in Reptiles magazine awhile back and the authored suggested females should be three, maybe even four years of age before trying to breed. They are definitely not corn or king like in that matter.

was trying to see if anyone could verify this number. With all the people who deal with subocs someone has got to know. I am surprised to see the lack of responses.

Yeah, I was sure some of the suboc folks would respond. Like you, I am a newbie to subocs and not close to breeding my pair for another year, probably two. Still, I think under 300 grams may be a bit too small IMO. They are definitely slower to mature than say corns, and would quess that at around three to four years old you would have a solid three plus footer if feeding consistently. Even a picky feeder should get that size by four years old. I am hoping someone more experience with subocs like dustyrhoades will reply to your post. I will try to see if I kept that Reptiles mag with the suboc article in it.

You will always get different opinions but I think the size Kevin mentioned is in the correct ball park. I PERSONALLY would agree with wanting a female to be at least 3ft and at least 3 years old. I wouldn't worry as much about the weight. A female with that age, length and a healthy body weight should be good in my opinion (for what it's worth).
