how should i handle situation???????

adamjeffery Apr 28, 2010 02:39 PM

a little over a month ago i purchased a snake from the classifieds here.from a well established breeder. i checked him out on the boi first. when the snake arrived everything looked good and the snake was hissing and a little angry.
i put him in quarentine and 3 days later went and checked on him. he had a whistle when he was taking a breath and was also in blue.
i emailed the seller immediatly and he said he checked snake over and even looked in its mouth to make sure all was ok. i said it may be a noise do to shed and ill check him out after he sloughs.
so snake shed out and noise appeared to be gone. i emailed seller telling him so. 2 days later sound was back. emailed seller again.
i ended up taking snake to vet and he gave a course of baytril 1 shot per day every other day for a total of 5 shots.
i emailed seller again. last few times i emailed him all he sent back was thanks for the update. now the snake is getting worse and the seller wont even respond to me. i did get a text saying his screen broke on his laptop but his ads still get posted everyday.
i really want him to refund my money and ill ship it back at my cost but he wont even acknowledge me.
im not ready to bash him on the boi yet just because he very well may have comp problems, WHAT SHOULD I DO ? AM I IN THE WRONG FOR WANTING MY MONEY BACK. THE SANKE HAS BEEN SICK SINCE DAY 1 AND I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH HIM SINCE DAY 1.

I guess it is too late to get the breeder a seat in your Grandfather's car for that ride.

Seriously, we have to police ourselves. There is no regulatory board, like for contractors.

the closest we have is the B.O.I. and he checked clean before i purchased him. the sad thing is i jumped the gun and posted a good guy rating before the animal was out of quarentine. i posted it the day the snake arrived. not much i can do about that.
i wont post on the B.O.I. until after this is settled or not settled.

If the seller REALLY said, "....I looked into his mouth to see if everything was ok," or something along those lines, I find that odd. I have never had to look into one of my snake's mouths to see if everything is ok, prior to shipping. It sounds as if they knew something was wrong with the snake, IF they had to do that thorough of a check prior to shipping, or, they are flat out lying.

you know that should have thrown a red flag with me as well, but those are his exact words..." i even checked his mouth out before shipping him".....well that email came after i already had the snake if it was before then maybe i would have avoided this situation.
thanks

I always love the statement "I bought my snake from a well established breeder." Like that means all will be fine. Out of about 20 something purchases I have only bought a few from "A well established breeder."

I have only had one incident with a snake sale. The snake came in with some kind of a burn or an infection on its side. The breeder was a well know name from Florida and bent over backwards to make everything right. First of all he refunded 150.00 dollars on the spot for a deal that was only 750.00. He asked me to take it to a vet of my choice at his expense if I wanted to treat it, which I did. He offered me a full refund and to pay all my bills shipping back. After pleading with him in letting me try and heal her on my own he agreed and I was able to cure the injury. All he wanted from me was daily reports on her health and her progress. NOW that is what I call a well established breeder.

Please look at all the responses and I think you will know how to handle this awful situation that someone as good a person as you definitely does not deserve. What an awful situation on every level.

Regards,
Bill

well i usually buy from smaller breeders as well. this guy isnt like ralph davis or greg graziani size hes just a larger small time breeder who has been around a while.
i like dealing with those that are well established because they usually have better customer service and make good when their is a problem.
but bigger breeders normally have more problems because each animal gets less attention than those from smaller breeders who can concentrate on the few animals they have.

Did you take the snake to a reptile vet? Did they culture the snake before giving antibiotics? Did you forward the vet report to the seller? I've seen twice in the story where you told him the snake seemed fine so IDK - yeah sucks that he won't work with you one way or another but it's hard to judge the situation from one side of the story.

yes in my post i stated i took the snake to the vet. the vet did not do a culture, but said it was best to put him on broad spectrum anti biotic which was baytril.
i did tell him once that the noise had gone after the snake had shed. it didnt make a noise after it shed AT THE MOMENT I CHECKED HIM. i didnt stand their more than a min, i didnt want to stress the snake out more than needed. the next time i heard the noise is when i called the vet and made an appt.

I didn't ask if you took him to a vet I read that much - I asked if you took him to a reptile vet? An inexperienced vet will do more harm than good - a culture is necessary to determine the proper treatment - find one that will take care of the snake properly. Keep trying to contact the breeder to work something out. Did you get any paperwork with a phone number? Perhaps if you checked him out on the BOI one of his past customers can get you a phone number. Good luck.

yes i took him to a reptile vet. i dont know of any vet that would treat a reptile that wasnt a reptile vet, not here in ny anyway.
the problem i feel is my vet is an older vet and he may not be as up to date as some. i asked him to do a culture and a sensitivity test and he said he didnt feel it was necessary and he would just prescribe a broad spectrum.
i got a number from the local pet store of another vet the same distance away who is supposedly well versed in reptile care. so im calling him tomorrow. ill make sure this one does a culture and sensitivity test.

You didn't receive a healthy snake. That's the only thing that matters at this point. If I send someone a snake, they shouldn't be taking that snake to the vet right away. I'd replace the snake first.

It's on the breeder.
