Branford, CT "Bioblitz"

BBBruno Sep 22, 2003 06:09 AM

On Saturday, September 13 I participated in a "Bioblitz" in the town of Branford,CT. The "blitz" is a 24 hour event in which participants identify all living entities in the given town, mapped into sectors. Such events bring in quite an assembly of talent, and it was indeed an honor to be approached for this. My primary duty was to do identification of spiders(found my first Ariadna bicolor),but was also involved as one of the herpers. The following herps were cited and recorded as occurring inthis small coastal town just a few miles east of New Haven:

REPTILES: Black Rat Snake, Black Racer, Northern Ringneck, Eastern Garter, Eastern Ribbon, Northern Water, Northern Copperhead, Northern Brown, Snapping Turtle, Eastern Painted Turtle,Stinkpot.

AMPHIBIANS: Two-lined Salamander, Northern Dusky Salamander, Spotted Salamander, Red Backed Salamander in both "redback" and "leadback" phase, Spring Peeper, Wood Frog, Pickeral Frog, Green Frog, Bullfrog.

All in all, a good day.

Bart Bruno
