update on outside enclosure

yakob Apr 28, 2010 10:07 PM

Slowly getting there. Finally have the outside area mostly complete. 9'w x 18'l x 8'h. Will have a 4' x 9' dirt area for digging and nesting when it's completely finished. Radiant floor heating should be here in the next few days and the inside floor will be next. pics below

If you haven't, you will need to secure the borders of the dirt area so that they will not burrow underneath. If you don't they will dig out or lay eggs so far under the concrete slab that you will have a very difficult time retreiving them.

Just a word of caution.

Thanks for the caution. In some of the photo's you can see some chain link on the dirt. That is going down before the dirt goes back in. I am going to put two or three rows of wall bricks along the edge of the concrete pad to hopefully end up with about 2' of dirt. Am kinda thinking of pouring a small retaining wall.......I just hate mixing concrete!

If you place cinder blocks, make sure they are covered or filled in with large rocks. I once had a cyclura lay eggs in one of my old cages and couldn't find them until years later when I tore the cage apart. She had layed them in a cider block. I still cant beleive that she was able to squease between the narrow cage base into the block. This is an art. You will build this enclosure now and then you will dream of how you can make it better, and someday build another and learn from the previous.
Enjoy!

This a pick of one of my previous enlosures.

Manny, 3 years ago my smallest female Rhino laid eggs. I knew she did by her looks and behaviour but I coud NOT find them. YUP SHE LAID THEM IN A HOLE IN A CINDER BLOCK. It took me 2 days to figure it out..DUH..all were bad by that time...It's interesting that happened to you also...thanks
