UVB lighting

We have had our first beardie since July. We have had him under a full spectrum ReptiSun bulb. Recently, the guy who works in the pet store where I buy crickets told me that we should also be using a separate UVB source. Do you agree?

I don't agree.
A seperate basking light yeah, but not another UVB bulb.

So the ReptiSun bulb has UVB & UVA rays? I thought it did. I do know that it needs to be hotter on the basking side. This bulb is only holding temps at about 95.

Thanks

It is the strip light your talking about right? Not a regular bulb type?

If it is a regular bulb, then no... it does not have UVB and then you would need to have one.

Sorry, I assumed you were talking about a flourescent. Please clearify.

Oh, God, you are right!! The place that we bought the little guy from told us that this bulb was all that we needed. After looking, it is just a Repti Basking Sun Light. So it only has heat and UVA rays. No wonder the little guy isn't growing much. I will get that new bulb and fixture tonight.

Do you recommend the light bar with the reptisun 5.0 or the mercury vapor bulb using the same ceramic fixture that I have now?

I actually prefer the strip lights and not the others. I find that I blow a lot of bulbs here and it is easier and less expensive to replace the flourescent bulb than it is for a new powersun.
This would also give you more general light across your tank

Ok, thanks. That settles it. I will get the strip light and keep the basking light.

Again, thanks!!

The Repti-glo 8.0 is also pretty good. It is what I decided to use in my new enclosure for my bearded dragon. I find he looks better underneath it than the reptiglo 5.0 I used. Then again, I also have a full spectrum tube light as well...it's a double fixture, figured it couldn't hurt and gives alot of light for the big cage.

Powersun actually puts out more UVB than does fluorescent lighting so UV is not an issue for you. The only issue here is that if its only 95 degrees you should add another basking light such as a zoomed to try and get it up to 110 at the hottest on the heated side and around 85 on the opposite side of the tank. Hope this helps
