Sunsets - getting muddy in here

Southernboids Apr 30, 2010 07:45 AM

Is it just me or has the Sunset gene appeared to have been muddied and modified?

As I understand it a Hypo Hog x Hypo Hog produces 25% supers being 50/50 shot Hypo and Hog in the super hypo form. So from that litter 25% could be supers or Sunsets.

Where are these 87% Hog Sunsets coming from and how are they Sunsets if not 50/50 Hypo Hog in the Super form?

I am no expert - but I have had (until last week) many Hypo Hogs that resemble the clean lines and patterns of Sunsets but they are still Hypo Hogs, not Sunsets- and upon close inspection you can see they have some black on their tails and they are not as clean as the supers. So I had them labeled as Hypo Hogs- Not Sunsets.

I see some selling Sunsets that say they came from Hypo Hog x Hypo Hog and they appear to be Het Sunsets to me.. not Sunsets. Then there are the 87%'s Sunsets I now see being advertised by more than one person seem to look very dark compared to normal Hypo Hogs and they have way too much black on the tail to even be considered a Sunset in my opinion - yet they are calling them Sunsets.

I guess I should also point out.. I really don’t care as I have sold off all of my animals except 3. However the imposter Sunsets - my new name for them - are bringing the prices of real Sunsets down and making what everyone first seemed to love about the Sunsets, the soft muted colors with extreme peaches and pinks showing through while maintaining the color change ability of the hog island into a dirty hypo.

I do not see how this is helping anyone - we should label our animals what they are and stand behind those genetics. By naming it something it is not is hurting those that actually have the Sunsets for sale.

I will state again.. MY OPINION. Just frustrating when you have a few clean animals left for sale and people are comparing them to other animals with the same Morph Name but appear nothing like the true morph. I cannot compete selling a true Sunset against a dirty hypo.

*** FIRST PIC CREDIT from D & M Breeders - the founder of Susnets with an example of a Sunset. Look at that tail, not a speck of black to be found, muted colors with very soft peach and pink hues. Now compare to what you see selling Today as Susnets.. What am I missing?

*** Second Pic - A litter from our Hypo Hog x Hypo Hog at Southernboids.com that contains Sunsets.

I think your right Shawn! With the growth of the hobby and the potential for monetary gain has definitely muddy not only Sunsets but other mutations as well. People not using the method of selective breeding has definitely attributed to this... This is why we're seeing animals that aren't as intresting as there predocessors were... Some people are finding out that unattattractive animals that don't exhibit the orginal idea of the pairing or purpose aren't easily sellable...

Just my two cents, which is really owned my the Government!!!

I totally agree, it's very frustrating, what I like to say to people that try to compare nice animals to muddy washed out ones is "Quality Costs," I see this mainly with my Blood Pythons, I had a guy tell me I was asking too much because he could get them wholesale for $50, and I find that a prime example, wholesale animals aren't usually from selective breeding, they're from cheap dull animals to be mass produced for money.

Just my thoughts

I 100% agreed with you bout these false sunset ads in classified. I know market and economy is down. These
false ads so called 87% sunset. The seller should be honest of what he got for sale. so it wont hurt the value of the animal.
I got my male sunset from mark yeakle emerald line.He has some nice true sunset.I also thanks Damian starting the sunset morph.

here's my 08 male sunset from mark yeakle

Dang -- I wrote for the last 15 minutes on my thoughts and opinions , and somehow , hitting the wrong key, I erased it all --- oh well . People who I believe have continued in the High caliber HypoHog/Sunsets are --

PM Herps / John Martino / Emerald Line

I don't believe the HypoHog x Hypo litters should be sold or marketed as HypoHogs/Sunsets . If anything , their should be 50% Hog blood , or higher -- not less (that waters it down ) . I produced a nice litter in 08 . A small litter of 10 (3 Sunsets) . I kept my 2 favorites and bought another female from John Martino . I hope that mine are somewhat close to a high caliber , but it's hard not to be a little biased --

female

Male

and a female that I picked up from John Martino ( bad pic)

All I can say is to be selective and buy from those who are as well.

I should be having a Jungle HypoHog litter in about 4 weeks . I wanted to be the first , but Ed Lilley has a big Hog girl due a little sooner than I --- these should make some nice combos , with enhanced colors . Here's my gravid Hog, bred by a Salmon Jungle --

Another thing to be said is that the only true sunsets are produced from using a Panamanian hypo to a hog. We have talked with Damien on numerous occasions and he laughs when he sees people pair a normal salmon with a hog to make salmon hog and then breeding them and calling the supers sunsets. Not a sunset. A super hypo hog indeed but the sunset name came from Damien working the Panamanian hypo into the hog island.
