Outside observations

rustynail777 May 01, 2010 01:14 AM

So 2 of my little cubans (almost a year old) have been out for a month now in their new enclosure.

A few things have really suprised me.
I was told by a few people to watch out how "wild" they become once outside.
Nothing even close.
The exact opposite in fact. They are puppy dog tame in 3 weeks.
They come to me,climb on me, sit on my head, shoulder ect.
They can be pet,and actually seem to seek attention....with no food involved.I have never had this much fun and ease in taming a lizard.

When they were inside....it was the opposite.
Now I do spend alot of time with them in their enclosure,I am basically a part of their daily life.I started by just making myself a part of their enclosure by reading or hanging out in there for an hour or so a day. Then they got curious and each day we made huge strides in trust.

Temps..
Care sheets saying 95-100 degrees?
That hardly even gets them started.
I have temp gunned them at 116-120 .

This week we had a cold front,on a 68 degree day in the sun they were temp gunning at 90-95 and seemed not nearly as happy and charged as a 95 degree day and 116-120 basking temp last week.

Sure they dont stay at that temp and will go to the shade, but they will come back and warm right back up.

Another thing that shocked me.
The female was absolutly dominant over the boy when they lived inside. To the point I almost seperated them because she was downright mean to him.Wouldn't even let him eat.

This has totally reversed.....he is king now.Not mean ,but he will take no crap from her.He has his spots and moments when he lets her know he is boss. They do get along and often time bask together ect.
But he sometimes just reminds her things are not what they used to be.

I love learning from these lizards, each day brings something new.
So I just thought I would share my first month outside with some cyclura.

Thanks

Everything you've said is well known and completely normal to people who actually are intimate with Cyclura behaviour. I once temp gunned one of my lg. cornuta at 123 degrees and STILL in the sun with his mouth open. I believe this is similar to a dog panting in terms of expelling heat. Sounds like they love their enclosure and now the fun starts...One can never REALLY understand nor reap the benefits of understanding these wonderful lizards unless they are in a lg. walk in cage as you have now. Cyclura arguably are one of the most rewarding of all reptiles kept properly except perhaps crocodilians which are much smarter and even more demonstrative to their keepers. Here we consider our Cyclura as part of the family much like my pet cat Elvis. When Patty or I are on that side of the farm EVERY CYCLURA is in his cage as close to us as they can get and will move around their enclosures in the hopes we're coming to scratch them and bring them treats...Strange but true...
