Caught my FIRST King Today...!!!

orchidspider May 02, 2010 05:52 PM

This might seem old hat to y'all who go snake hunting a lot, but even when I have been in the past, I have never found a king, even though I have been in their area. I have caught E. Milks, B Racers, Black Rats, and many small species. I work at a nature center here in Charlotte(Mecklenburg County) NC , and found this nice lady crossing the road in the park. She was going into the park area, and since that area has much more constant human activity going on, I decided that she was not going in the right direction. I caught her gently, and she was VERY well behaved, while I drove her up into the nature preserve- 750acers and let her go there. Such a nice experience and such a screamer lookin animal!

I forgot to mention that during a volunter trash pickup I lead earler today we found a nice looking copperhead by the pond and a very nicely marked northern watersnake. In the afternoon, when doing a skill badge with a group of brownie scouts, we saw a nice breeding pair of Eastern Fence Lizards as well as some of their young from last year, and I also saw some nicely marked Five Lined Skinks, including some breeding males with redish heads.

That's very cool. I have yet to find an Eastern King. I've found California Kings and Eastern Black Kings, but the "classic" Eastern King is high on my list of what I'd like to see in the wild.

Nice job!

I've heard other snake hunters from back east say the Eastern kings are not terribly common. Maybe thats why you have not seen one before. Congrats! thats a nice looking king.
