A bit worried about my male...

gabrielmtl Sep 22, 2003 09:10 AM

His set-up:

7 feet tall, 4 feet wide, 20" deep. 2 large ficus, good humidity and temps, 2 sources of UV, dropplet system, all screen.

Hes 5 months old.

He just finished a shed about 2 days ago. He is eating really well. But this week-end i noticed that just below his pooper, on his tail and for about half a inch towards the end of the tail, it is bigger the the rest of the tail. (he is not a fat cham to start with so it shows out)

I modified a picture of a other cham to show you want I mean. I did not have my camera this week-end and I dont want to wait for tonight. The picture exagerates the size but it will give you a good idea.

Any ideas on what it coudl be? Am I being worried for nothing? thanks!!!

If it is what i think it is, which is the lump after the anal vent of the chameleon, It means he has reached a certain degree of sexual maturity. That is merely his hemipenal bulge. His male sexual organ, if you will. You have nothign to worry about. But just to be certain we are really talking about the same thing, do post a picture tonite if you can.

You have to be right.. i was even expecting that to show up eventually... but you know how it is, I saw a change and got a bit scared...

I will take pictures tonight anyway just to be sure

Also, would this be a good time to go see my vet for a Xray to see if his bones are ok? She could also confirm that it is indeed his manhood...

thanks!

yeah...i know how it gets. You freak out easily when you love these googly-eyed fools so much!
About seeing the vet, well... is there anything you notice that is specifically wrong with teh apprearance of his bones? If there isn't anything out of the ordinary, you probabaly don't need to see the vet for an X-ray. Too many vet visits will definately deplete your wallet. Unless, of course you got too much money to spend.. LOL...it never hurts anyone , especially yoru cham to visit the vet regularly...except your wallet!!

Well, I woudlnt say i just have so much money to spend, but 40$ isnt a big deal just to make sure everything is fine.

My 2 chams look perfectly fine. I mean, they can twist their legs pretty much every way but arent they all like that...

they have nothing that looks like a problem.

Well, frequent check-ups are good for your chameleons, so bring them if you have the tiem and moeny. 40 bucks is a pretty good deal. I'd have to spend about 70 bucks...and that is for a vet who is inexpereinced with chameleons

gabrielmtl Sep 22, 2003 01:56 PM

Its 60-70 canadien... i said 40 us since most ppeople here are from the states.

so 70 is a good deal? She is not great with chams but she is ok. That exotic hospital in general has a excellent reputation.

Wow! I want to be a vet in the states! I pay $42 per visit, plus meds, and that's CDN... I guess I'm lucky. There is a place nearby that does exotics and rodents.
If you want to get his bones etc checked I'd wait until he has a noticeable "spurt". That is probably the time when any deficiencies would occur, if they are going to. I'm not sure what age that is for male vields.. he'd probably be good to go around 5/6? It's so easy to be paranoid... sometimes vet checks are good just for a DAY of peace of mind, lol.
