Cuddly Geckos

ecb Sep 22, 2003 09:46 AM

At MD mid atlantic my kids each got a Gecko, one from Kevin, and one from a woman named Billie
The man, Kevin, is the one I have read on here as being cool
The woman Billie was very informative, and told us about heat, humidity and care (especially about on the drive home)
when these guys were put together one IMEDIATLY acted subservient to the other, but the agressivness seems to shift back and forth
one day the Horizontal stripe is the agressive one for food, another day it is the Lat stripes turn
and when they are in a hide, the cuddle, one draped over the other (very cute, like kittens)
My concern is that neither of them seem to be interested in eating. We do not keep a lot of Crickets in the tank (some hide in the towels layers, or cracks in the hides) and there is a dish with Meal Worms (tiny ones) and there is a dish with Calcium we got from the breeder 'Billie' (I have reptical too)

Does any of this sound good? or Bad?

They are about 3-4" long each (supposedly a couple weeks apart in age) and in a 20 long Terrerium with a screen top, not thin fish tank with a hood
Humididty is low (50%) and temps are 70-84 (depending on what end)
They have a shallow water dish, and there is a small Cricket feeding dish with some fruit peel (small piece) Cricket water, and gutload (to keep the crickets that are not eaten from getting hungry and munching on the Geckos)

Is there anything they need?
I am going to the pet store tomorrow evening for some more Meal worms, or crickets

try and get a little bit bigger mealies, and crix. Do they have their own hide spots? Make sure you keep an eye on them to make sure there is no fighting. My vet told me at one time thatsometime when leos ride on other leos back its them trying to prove who is the more dominent one. So good luck. Make sure they have their own places to hide though,

They are not riding each other, the one under seems to be free to Roam when it decides to go away
and they do have lots of roo to hide
2 in the cool end, and one with multiple shelves in the hot end
I M getting the bigger Mealies, but not the supers for them yet
Their mouths are just bairly big enough to eat a med/Lrg Crick
so I have been sticking to the smaller ones (I cannot get Meds, just Small and LARGE (that actually chirp, and bite)

Keep the pointers coming, this my best way to learn until the kids give up the manual (they have it, and must be reading it because I keep getting told they are not done with it yet)

Sounds like you're doing a terrific job making sure your leos have everything they need.

It seems like your leos don't mind sharing the territory with each other. Mine sleep like that too. If food is the only issue where aggression comes into play, I would just make sure both of them are in different parts of the tank when you feed them. Make sure they're not eyeing the same bug at the same time. Your tank should be large enough for you to do this. If only one of them is consistently more dominant than the other, that's when you'll want to think about separating them.

You should probably bump up the temperature to the upper 80s. That could be affecting their appetite. Then again, when did you buy them? It's not uncommon for them to not start eating right away.

I don't know how old your kids are, but I think the manual's reading level is sort of advanced for kids. You might want to get them the leopard gecko book that's by Hunziker. I'm not sure of the title (Leopard Gecko something or other), but it's published by thf. It's got big pictures and explains things very simply.
