Just a refresher and ?

Has any heard of mites appearing from a spagnum nest box. I have one female go through a prelay shed this morning and I checked her shed as I always do and found a couple of mites in it also noticed there was one on her too. ( just to let every one know there has been no new animals introduced into the collection) I have been thinking could they come from her nest box and the spagnum?

also just a quick ? to everyone what was your best method of eradication? Provent a mite? or just daily soak for snakes and paper towels? Thanks in advance to everyones opinion.

YES, had it happen before. Preventa mite is the best. The tough thing is explaining to others if they find em first..

While I can't (and wouldn't) rule out mites at this point, I suspect that what you're seeing may, in fact, be Springtails. Springtails are a insect-like creatures (Hexapods) which belong to the Collembola. They generally feed on organic matter, with damp Sphagnum moss fitting the bill. While essentially harmless to snakes, they can sometimes be worrisome to the keeper, since they can show up "out of nowhere" and exist in large numbers.

Could you describe the little bugs you've noticed, or perhaps snap a picture of one? I'd recommend against treating your animals with pesticides unless necessary...

Cole, Thanks for the description, I will try and take a picture do not know if I can find one now. I cleaned the tank immediately after noticing the little bugs. I also threw away the lay box, I checked the cage and snake this morning and noticed no little bugs. I did not treat with anything just quickly clean with hot soap and water and gave the snake a good soaking.
