Where does it say...?

jscrick May 04, 2010 09:22 PM

Where does it say that WE aren't conservationists? Where does it say that WE aren't environmentalists?

I'll tell you where -- Only in the fraudulent propaganda peddled by those far from mainstream, the extremist Animals' Rights activists.

It is nothing but groundless baseless stereotypical assertions with NO merit and NO basis in fact. We need to burst that bubble.

I was an environmentalist and I was a conservationist long before it became a money making tax exempt industry.

I'm sure plenty of people like me, along the Gulf Coast, would be more than willing to volunteer their time and resources to assist in mitigating the environmental disaster headed their way.

Let Charlie Crist know!

Of course I agree with you, John. But if you spend much time here on the forum it's easy to see where that impression comes from. How many times have Environmentalists and animal rights people been lumped together here? The truth is that the right wing in this country hates environmentalists, conservationists and animal rights wackos in equal measure, and their mouthpieces lose no opportunity to paint us all with the same broad brush. Disgusting.

Perhaps there are two types of Environmentalists and there are two types of Conservationists. The Professionals and the Lay People.

I was referring to the "professionals", those that seem to align themselves with the extremist agenda. Those that may just think a bit too much of themselves. Those that take themselves a little too seriously. Those are the ones that I see as calling people like myself out as not caring and not contributing.

You see Brad, I see myself as one of the Layman Stewards of our Natural Resources. Nothing formal, just a day to day, give a hoot mentality. You see, people like you and me, we do more for the environment every day, than 10 of those other guys put together do in a week. We just don't run around tooting our own horn, telling everyone how grand we are. We don't have a title. We don't have a position. We're just regular Joe's, doing the next right thing, as we see it.

And, I'm getting sick and tired of that other class telling me I'm no good and scapegoating me simply to justify their own existence.

Now, that's what I'm talking about!

All well and good, but how many of us "lay environmentalists" does it take to clean up a polluted river system, pass tougher air quality standards, or save an endangered species? We need the big environmental groups, and finding ourselves on opposite sides of a single issue is no reason to abandon them. It's a reason to redouble our efforts to make ourselves and the relevant science understood.

I'm not opposed to working with reasonable scientists. And I wasn't referring to reasonable scientists.

I do not consider myself an Ideologue. I consider myself more of a Pragmatist.

Almost nothing is cut-in-stone in this crazy World we live in. We live in a very dynamic World of thought and constantly changing ideas. The Dinosaurs were Ideologues.

That's EXACTLY what I'm getting at, John. The more we demonize those we consider to be our opponents, the less communication there will be, and nothing will get solved. We've got to stop screaming at each other and start talking.

The Dinosaurs were Ideologues

But notice they were around for 150 million years, to OUR 2 million (at best)

Anyone want to bet that Gov. Crist rolls over and plays dead on this?
