The power of persistence --

amazondoc May 05, 2010 02:19 PM

Y'all may remember that I posted a few weeks ago (March 15, in fact) about an 09 Hondo who refused to eat f/t. I tried just about everything -- I had brained pinks, I had fed in a small tub, I did the pinky zombie dance, I force fed pinky heads, I scented pinkies with a dead chameleon (no, not anole -- a chameleon body from the local herp shop).

Well, I am very happy to report that THE STEEENKIN SNAKE ATE LAST NIGHT!! I kept offering f/t pinkies every time I fed the other snakes -- and this morning the pinky had disappeared. I slooooooowly lifted the hide to be sure, and there was -- gasp -- a lump in the snake! Yippee!! This is the FIRST time that dratted animal has eaten on its own since I got it in December!

Now I'm crossing my fingers that 1. the pinky stays down; and 2. the stupid animal has finally caught on and will keep eating.
Thanks to everyone who offered ideas and support!

That's great to hear!

If the pink wasn't too big, and the temps are in the low 80's for it to properly digest it, you should be good to go.

Yes, most of the time with hatchlings that don't have an initial feeding reponse, once the "switch" has been triggered, they usually go onto be great feeders, it just takes a certain something to get the "switch" tripped initially(whatever it may be)..LOL!

good luck with it continuing to feed, as I know the aggravation all too well..LOL!

Thanks Doug!

I've got two other hondos from the same breeder, purchased at the same time, and with hatch dates within 2 weeks of this one -- and those other two are already happily munching on fuzzies. This trouble maker has some catching up to do!

Congrats on your success!!! I can also feel your sigh of relief LOL!!!

Man, I have an 09 female cal king that was the same way. I tried F/T every which way, live, scented, etc., etc. I had to assist feed her for a couple of months to keep her going. I finally said "to heck with it" because I wasnt sure I wanted to raise and breed such a bad feeder. I kept offering her food, and after about three weeks she took a f/t pink on her own. After that, "Katie bar the door"!! She is up to weanlings now and has grown like crazy. I have an 09 male I plan to breed her to that was a great feeder from day one, but only takes fuzzys and cant even handle a hopper yet. Goes to show how different they can be. I am sure yours has turned the corner and will be feeding for you like gangbusters!!

Thanks Kevin. I hope my troubles are over, but only time will tell!

Well, your snake learned a valuable lesson and will probably continue onward as hoped. You may hit a snag in the road the next few feedings, but I am hoping it stays turned on for you and your problems are over!!!

Good luck with that girl Doc. At least it's eating on it's own. I have a Thayeri from last year that will still only eat brained pinks, aarrrg

If it gives you trouble next feeding, put it on the phone and I'll let my wife yell at it. I guarantee it will fall in line.

LOL!

Unfortunately, snakes are more or less deaf....otherwise, it would have heard ME yelling all these months!
