I,ve been reading about the laws pertaining to texas non game animals. I'd like to get a permit for field collecting. Do you get these at the same place you would a fishing licence? Also is it illegal to trade or give away a Texas rat snake?

Hi,

Yes, you get the nongame permits like you would a fishing license. There may be other places, but Wal-Mart is the 1st place I think of for it. You may have to explain what the nongame permit is, but they should be able to find it.

There was a recent change regarding the permits, and the Texas rat snake is not on the list of "affected species." As I understand that, it would mean that you can do what you wish with a Texas rat snake - TPWD would apparently not regulate the collection, keeping, trading, or whatever with that species.

Best wishes,
