First time breeding kings

mrkent May 06, 2010 11:52 PM

So, since I know you are all kind to the less experienced, I will ask. I have bred cornsnakes, but got my first kingsnakes last year. My female grey-band is large enough I am sure (about 3 feet, and very plump), but not sure about my male. She acts ready to mate, even has raised her tail as he crawled over her. He is considerable smaller and doesn't quite seem to know what to do.

Is it ok to leave them together a few days, since she hasn't acted agressive toward him? I haven't read anywhere that grey-bands eat other snakes.

This is the female.

Thanks.

Several of my alterna will not lock up until after the 2nd post hibernation shed..

For opinions on if they are of size to breed.. Post a new pic of your animals with something in the photo (dollar bill/soda can/etc.), so we can see the approx. size of the pair.

She has had her second post-brumation shed. He was not brumated, but has shed 3 times since January.

I will try to post some new pics tonight.

Here are some pics from today. The first is the female at 34 inches. The second is the male at 25 inches.

OK.. So my opinion is that they are both on the small side for breeding this season... But, i am sure there are folks out there that would breed them at that size with success. i think the real issue for you this season is that your male was not wintered..

Good luck, keep trying and keep us posted

In many cases age is just as an important factor as size -- if your alterna are at least three years old and are that size, your chances are pretty good if they were cycled correctly and in good overall health (which it appears as such).

Introduce the female into the males' cage, and you may include her shed as well. Sometimes it may not be until after the 2nd or 3rd shed that the male might respond as is the case with alterna sometimes. Good luck...

They are both '08s. The difference in size is due to the fact that she was fed through her first winter, but the breeder of the male brumated his '08s through their first winter.
