new habitat

fyrpix May 10, 2010 11:35 PM

I’m building a new habitat for my snake. I took an old 7 foot jewelry case and painted out the back mirrors. I sealed the bottom so no water will soak in. The lid is an old, solid door that I cut holes in for humidifiers, and ventilation. I sanded all the old paint off and repainted it with an oil base paint so it will not splinter. Only thing I haven’t figured out is heat. Is a heat rock the best thing to use here? The top and bottom are wood so an under tank heater isn’t an option.

Thanks

Heat rocks are never a good option - they're well known for causing burns because they get way too hot, especially for heat sensitive snakes like rainbow boas. A much better option would be a radiant heat panel regulated by a thermostat. Admittedly, this is more expensive, but if heat tape, flexwatt, or an under tank heater is not an option, there's not much choice left.

Where would I get something like the heat panel?

Some petstores carry them, but yuo can order them from various online reptile suppliers, like LLLreptiles, The Beam Farm, and others...Just check the 'Businesses' tab above and look under supplies.

Make sure any paint and sealant cures completely before you put any animals in the cage. You'll have to post some pictures when you're finished. Best of luck.
