I messed up. Can someone help me.

ChadMLane May 11, 2010 06:45 PM

Ok here's the deal.

I think I introduced 2 of my females to my male way to early. I hibernated them for 12 weeks, at 54-56 avg. I woke them up, I fed them, and I waited and waited for them to shed. (I was impatient) I introduced two of my females to my male, he showed interest, they did not, I can't recall how long I left them together.

About 2 weeks ago, one of my females shed, so I introduced her to the male, and he had no reaction, left them together for 2 days, and nothing. So I introduced her to another male, and he tired, but she didn't let him, so I moved her back, and the next morning, I went to check on everyone, and she laid 13 infertile eggs.

Then my 2nd female shed, so I introduced her to the male, and nothing, introduced her to the other male, and he tried, but she wouldn't. Now she is laying infertiles.

My third female shed, doesn't look gravid, and will not breed, I never introduced her to the males before sheding.

Did they ovulate because I introduced them to early, and they didn't get a chance to breed?

Should I just feed them 2-3 times a week small meals, let them gain some weight back. (One lost some weight other didn't hardly lose any) and introduce them again? Should I wait for a shed?

Any help would be great, Hogs are much different than Kingsnakes, or Pinesnakes.

Thanks,
Chad

How old/big are the male/males? How long were they out of brumation? And did you put them together at all in between the 1st introduction.

Putting them together early shouldn't have mattered. The females are either ready or not. Putting them together at the right time is what matters. So, either your male wasn't ready or isn't fertile, or if you didn't put them together again, he never had the chance to breed her at the right time. The infertiles would be because he wasn't with them at the RIGHT time, not because he was with them too early.

Sheeding in hognose is not so clear in every cases. My female laid eggs without shed. You don`t must worry about shed a lot. In breedeing I use this method: one day male with female, 3 day rest, in first day of rest I feed female and from time to time male.

I put male to the female only if she is interested. She must shake her body when she saw him.

Hey Chad,
My experience this year with hogs on over a bunch of years with other snakes is that you should not wait for the shed... Snakes can and do ovulate without shedding... I take snakes out of brumation and put them together after 2 feedings... I will keep the male with the female usually until she is clearly gravid... If the male becomes uninterested, I will take him out and reintroduce him in a couple of days...

In my room, 1st shed =s prelay. I always introduce males within a week or two of waking up, usually after a feeding or two and only leave him in if she's interested in love not food.
