Beardie questions

Hefe Sep 22, 2003 12:34 PM

Im thinking about getting a Bearded dragon and I have a few questions. What size tank will I eventually need to keep a dragon comfortably? Is a 40 wide gal big enough? Or is that too shallow of a tank? Also is it possible to buy a young dragon and know what the sex is? In leopard geckos the sex is determined by the incubation temp, are beardies like that? And lastly, can a singe male or female be kept and be happy alone? Thanks for any replies!!

P.S. any Dragon breeders in the New England area?

I don't know much with Gallons but if you make the vivarium 4ft long, 2ft in depth and 2ft in height, this'll be great (You'll have to find out what that is in cm)

Bearded Dragons sex isn't determined by temperature. Also, young Bearded Dragons are notoriously hard to sex. Your best bet is to buy one now, wait for it to be sexually mature so it is easier to sex, and then buy a mate for it. This means that both can be quarantined and there's no risk of what i'm about to cover.

The problem with keeping males and females together is that the male will attempt to bred when he is ready. This means a drastically shortened lifespan for the female, so really, if you plan to ger a male and female, i'd suggest two seperate vivariums, and putting them together during breeding season.

A 40 Gallon breeder tank is the minimum size to be able to house a single adult bearded dragon. BD's need more floor space than height in the tank since they are not aboreal lizards so it is ok to have shorter tanks. It's the really young baby dragons that cannot be visually sexed but a dragon does not have to be an adult to be sexed. I am not sure about the incubation temps thing. A dragon kept alone and still thrive.

Males are generally easier to sex than females as youngsters. Some breeders can 99.9% sex them at 6 weeks, others wait to guarantee sex until around 3 months or more.

We got ours in July and we figured out that it was a boy last week. It can be determined by the size and shape of the head, by looking for the nodules in front of the vent or by looking for the little holes on the inside of the back thighs. If they are more profound, I am told that is a boy.

You hear alot of different things from different people!!
