breeding question

majinchip May 13, 2010 05:47 PM

this is my first attempt at breeding boas so i have no experience. any advice will help. i think it may be late in the season to introduce my male and female but it looks like they copulated. they're in my basement so the cool down lasted a lil longer than most, i guess. anyway, i've had them together over a week and have seen his tail sharply kinked to the side at least 4 times. never actually saw the deed being done, but i'm assuming. how will i know when to seperate them again? will she give me signs? they are always coiled up together on the warm and cooler sides of the cage. they seem to be content to stay together. will she get annoyed with him when she knows she's pregnant?

I don't have too much breeding experience, but my opinion is it's better to leave him in too long than not long enough. Last year, I think I pulled my male out early and got a big pile of slugs from the female.

This year, I waited until well after the female ovulated and had her POS (post ovulation shed). I left him with her until probably a month after her POS (maybe overkill, but they seemed to enjoy each others company). I got a nice healthy litter from her just a couple weeks ago.

After the male knows he's "done the deed" he will no longer be interested in the female and you shouldn't see anymore courting. I'd leave him in at least a few weeks after you think she's gravid, unless the male seems like he really wants to get out lol. It can't hurt.

Good luck!!

Once a female is gravid, she usually stays on the warm side of the cage, only moving to maybe get a drink. And here's a great read for you:

Breeding Boa Constrictors is the last section, tons of info!
