Who's the shrewdest milk head here?!

bwaffa May 14, 2010 11:42 AM

Identifying by meristics or locality, catching a misdiagnosis on the classifieds or spotting a subtle hybrid is one thing. But can you speciate while it's still in the egg?! I got these last night, so I'm putting it to you -- the test that truly separates the men from the boys. I'll buy the winner a pitcher!

Looks like sinaloans but due to the poularity of Nelsons over the Sinaloans I'll guess Nelson's. Can I get a Pizza with that pitcher?

Ummmmm....sorry to be the "bubble burster", but since you ONLY have campbelli on your website.......then it must be Burmese python eggs..........LOL.

I WIN!!!!! I'll take a plate of hot wings and a 10-minute shiatsu rub by a 5'2" belly dancer.

Jerry may have been the shrewdest (albeit sneakiest) of the bunch! Great and reasonable guesses all around, but these came from my San Diego Gopher Snake, not a milk snake. While watching her deposit last night, I sat there thinking about how similar (size notwithstanding) all colubrid eggs look. It's funny how we can sit and bicker for days over something's alleged subspecies, painstakingly counting scales and referencing old photographs, but at the embryonic stage of development even distant genera look pretty much identical. Sort of brings you back to the old (and essentially debunked) idea that "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny." High school biology anyone?

Thanks for playing and indulging my non-Lampropeltine photographs. If anyone is putting together a milk-head Daytona get together, drop me a line and a round of drinks (and maybe even a belly dancer) will be on me!

Cheers,

Brad

PS -- website updates coming soon!

There's 10 minutes of our lives we'll never get back. Thanks for wasting it for us.

Dell, we can still meet for some brews! I'll bring my fishing rods.
