Need quick ID on snake

vfluckey May 25, 2003 09:12 PM

I've captured a snake, and am not sure what it is. I suspect its a yellow/green rat snake, but I dont think they are in my area. I found the snake under a box in an open field in Pierre, SD. It's a tan color w/ a greenish tint, and no pattern. The underside is white. The snake is about a foot long, and the head/face is similar to that of a garter snake. The reptile also released the familar garder snake scent when captured. Can anybody help?

Best guess, if you’re mistaken on the length, would be a racer. But at 12”, racers should still retain their blotched pattern. A more far-out guess: a brownish-colored smooth green snake, but I don’t think they get into central South Dakota where you are.

I suppose you would have posted a photo if you were able, huh?

That appears to be correct, I found some racer pics after reading your reply, and it appears to be a western, or blue racer. I was wrong on the length, the snake is closer to 2 ft long.

Thank you for your help!

You are welcome. I should have thought to add the final diagnostic character: did it bite -> (racer) or was it totally docile -> (smooth green)

the snake did act somewhat agressive, but did not bite. It did however vibrate it's tail before I picked it up.
