tegu illness?

vemon Sep 22, 2003 02:18 PM

i recently rescued two tegus that i believe are black tegus. they were kept in potting soil that was almost mud and filthy w/feces. an improper diet and no uv lighting were also not in affect. one of them has what looks like blisters all over its back and head. it has one inside its ear. i have talked to a good friend that went to school for herpatology. he thinks that it is a skin infection and keeping them on newspaper for a while will help. does anyone else know what this could be? i feel bad but do not have the money right now. will 2-3 months be too long to wait? please help!!!!

Keep the lizards on newspaper, covered with paper towel if you like, and keep it clean. Daily baths in a dilute betadine solution might help but the rest of the time keep them dry. If any of the blisters seem to be open you can apply a light cover of triple antibiotic ointment or Silvadene cream. Keep them plenty warm. If you don't see improvement in a short time please get them to a vet. Most vets will make some kind of payment arrangements if you can't pay the whole bill. Good luck!
