I just picked this guy up yesterday, and he was advertised as a normal, but I dont think so. Any idea what he is?

Most likely an Anerythristic A corn, it is definitely some kind of anery. Stunning serpent. The irises are gray/silver, so it has to be an anery, but the little of the snake we see in the pic seems to show "common" coloration in random loations. Those locations are not in the color zones of anery corns where one would expect to see "earth tones" that are common in male aneries. Depending on how color accurate the picture is, this could be a paradox corn. No paradox corns (visually denomstrating mutation markers that are genetically contradictory to the predominate morph/mutation) to date have reliably reproduced themselves. In other words, reproduction of the paradoxical markers were not inherited in classic Mendelian proportions. As far as I know, except for extremely rare and unexpected instances, no paradox has reproduced its' paradoxical phenotype at all.
All that said, it's a beautiful snake, and one I recommend keeping and test breeding.
Congratulations,

I will see what I can do on some full body pics. Not bad for a "free to good home" snake.

Very handsome fellow!Definitely a keeper! Jeff
There's no visible yellow on the neck?

Looking at the pics I have with me, there are a couple small places that are yellow, but not much.
Lee
Here is a full body pic. Let me know what you think. If there are any other pics you want to see, let me know.
Lee

It's difficult to tell if your's has random brown along the body or brown in most of the markings. Regardless, the low volume of yellow on that one (and the dark black markings) really makes that one stand out in a crowd (of aneries). If you can get a pic similar to the one I'm posting now, it would show us more about the volume of that unexpected brown we saw on the head.
This male is the result of breeding an anery motley to a charcoal. The females from this family have no earth tones on them, but all the males were similar to this one. Last year, in the F2s, I got snow and blizzard motleys, charcoal and anery motleys, and some of those may be both colors. It was a fun brood.

That is one interesting looking specimen. I really like it.

OK, the first thought that popped into my head was " man thats a nice clean looking gray rat snake." Then after the whole body shot, the contrast in the color of the markings lead me to think it is actually a nice looking anery.
Even though the pix are not the same as holding the snake in your hand, I see no rat snake markers. I'm sure it's a corn, and I'm sure it's an anery, and I'm sure it's not a hybrid. I know that sounds vein of me to make such bold statements from pictures, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct about it being a pure corn.

well, considering you have looked at thousands more corn snakes then the rest of us, I wouldn't hesitate to believe you and I hate throwing hybrid around so hopefully we can see more pics and he can try to get some background from the breeder

Long time, no chat, Jimmy. 1st, how's everything on your end of the orb?
Yeah, I could look at any snake second, third, fourth time, and see something I missed before. Tough to say ANYthing about a pic of something, vs seeing it in person. That said, I don't see anything alien in that snake, but , I COULD be wrong.
Forgot to address your subject line. Yeah, last night, I wrote to Jeff asking why my site was inaccessible. He said they were having technical difficulties, but were working on it. Hope it's better now.

Hey Don
Things are going well on this end.
My season seems to be a little behind but that's ok, I'm cutting back a little anyway so no big hurry.
Just working on a few of my favorites.
When is that second book going to hit the shelves...or your web site?
Looking forward to it.
I hope we get to see more pictures of that anery. The face shot was interesting but the overhead shot did look a little odd to me.
I'll definitely defer to your experience on this one. I think you've seen a few more then I have (few thousand....lol)
speaking of anerys...that one you pictured is special...definitely a different look...I like it.
have a good season

Ditto !

Both are like eating an elephant. They're HUGE jobs, but can only be done one bite at a time. Of course, the obstruction is the darned demanding snakes. If they'd just take a six month break from eating (don't wanna brumate the youngsters), I'd have a chance to finish these elepehants. Seems like the only days I get to rest are the ones that DON'T end in a "y". grin

Like everyone else I'd say it looks anery. But it also looks like it might have something else in the mix.

I know how bad we tend to be when we see something a little different, we start to speculate something else in the mix...and that can really drive me crazy sometimes... but darn that thing looks like it has black rat in it from that angle...or something...lol
The face shot had me thinking simply a special looking anery but this shot throws me.
interesting.

Yea, the dark areas are more a dark rust red, than black. And the white areas have what looks like a haze of the rust color.
Its deffently an interesting corn, to say the least.

Wow! You guys may be on to something! I would like to see a full length belly shot.
Jeff
That's always one of those things that is easier to tell in person than in photos.
Nice corn either way. It's not like corns have the purest captive blood anyway. No reason to get all 'mexicana kingsnake' on ya....lol
