on the road yesterday

draybar May 16, 2010 02:54 PM

went for a ride yesterday looking for photo ops and found this girl!!
She was easily five foot long and gravid!!
She was huge. I took some photos and set her on her way.
If she had not been gravid I might have kept her. She was fairly docile.
In this case I just thought it would be much better to let her lay those eggs and keep the species going in my area.

I was about to get a comparrison shot of her next to my keys but a car started up the road so I set her on her way and contiuned my drive.
a little off topic but I also found a fiesty snapper yesterday.

That is very cool Jimmy.
I'm still trying to find my first big Rat Snake of the year.
I dig that Snapping Turtle too!

Awesome find. Great looking snake. What part of the country do you live in? Looks like that one could have some Texas in it? I know black rats are pretty variable across their range but something about that one reminds me of a Texas.

no Texas in that girl
She came from the very Southeast corner of Tennessee.
A lot of them around here have that red speckling.

Very cool...
Both finds...
It's so nice to see movement after the "endless winter"!!!
.
.
Also cool is that the Rat Snake was a female.. Seems like 95% of adult, moving snakes at this time of the year are males.

seems like most I find are males.
she was soaking up some "rays"
She looked like she was about to go into shed so I'm sure she won't be on the move too much longer.
I will have to check the area regularily in August and September...may get lucky and find one of her young. That would be pretty cool

Jimmy,

Where do you live? I notice that a lot of (presumably) Male Texas Rats have been on the prowl ( I have about 10 pics loaded in the computer now..). Must be THAT time of year..
