DAILY TIMES (Delmarva, Virginia) 17 May 10 Ocean City considers Boardwalk reptile ban
Ocean City: The mayor and City Council are set to tackle a slew of matters at tonight's meeting, considering bills that would prevent anyone from walking leashed lizards on the Boardwalk and would allow beach stand operators to rent cabanas, not just chairs and umbrellas.
An ordinance the council is scheduled to vote on for the first reading would prohibit "nondomesticated animals" from being taken on streets, sidewalks, the Boardwalk or the beach. Prior rules required residents to get a permit in order to keep snakes, alligators or other reptiles as pets but didn't place limits on where in the city they could be taken on walks.
Councilwoman Margaret Pillas, at a town meeting a few weeks ago, said the rules about unusual pets' freedom of movement in Ocean City seemed vague. Council members said they knew of instances where police encountered a man walking a leashed iguana on the boards and stopped him while they tried to figure out if he was breaking any laws.
The proposed law, as written, would ban "snakes, alligators, crocodiles or other reptiles, or any animal not considered a domesticated household pet" from being taken out of the house unless the owner was taking the animal to a veterinarian.
