Thermostat question

Hognosedude11 May 17, 2010 10:25 AM

i am building a rack for my milks and hogs, and was wondering if the BAH-1000SC from BIG APPLE HERPS would be a good choice. The rack will hold 30 28 qt. tubs. the shelves will have 4 ft. of flex watt per shelf with 10 shelves.

I have not used or even seen the BAH-1000, but according to the website it will handle up to 800 watts.. You did not mention what size flex watt your using, but as long as your under 800watts you should be ok..

To be safe you should call the distributor and describe your application and get their opinion on this.

In my opinion a good proportional would be better... I have the Big Apple proportionals on all of my rack... Been using the same ones for years without issues...

You should spend the extra 70 bucks for the quality product... When it comes to our reptiles heat source, we should not go cheap...

Also you do not want to keep your Hogs like you do Milks... While they are both North American colubrids, their heating requirements are a bit different...

I use Helix controllers on all of my racks.. And, I use one per rack.. They are more expensive than the controller that your thinking about, but they are top quality products.

I have used those myself, and they are good. But I would go for a
Helix instead, you may pay more, but if you have that many
tubs and snakes to heat it's best to go with the Helix. You won't
be disappointed.

I use a Herpstat Pro on my adult hognose racks and I use Ranco and Johnson thermostats on all of my other racks.

I really like the Herpstat Pro. It has a lot of features for the money.

If you want to go for something cheaper than a herpstat get a new or used Ranco.

Have to agree, go proportional. Best money you will spend, and take away alot of worry and headache on setup. I use all 3, helix, Herpstat Pro, and Herpstat ND. Over time, I've been replacing my Helix with all Herpstats. More features, easier to program, built in nightdrop without extra equipment, etc.. Almost all of my Helix come up with error messages at one time or another over the years (but have kept correct temp), never had an issue with a Herpstat. And, they show and are programmable to .1 degree. I don't think that matters much, but another feature, might matter on an incubator.

I agree too, go proportional. I also recommend using low watt 4" heat tape.
