...was reading a post on here suggesting that we need to band together with the dog and cat owners...well that will never happen why?...most dog and cat owners are anti-snake ownership and mostly adhere to the good snake/dead snake BS...and because they dont think they have anything to worry about (execpt for poor apbt owners)because a huge percent of poloticians are dog and cat owners themselves and do you think they will pass a ban on THEIR pets? heck no...just look up one of the online news segments with public comments about fl.pythons...see all the negative ignorant BS?(and you will also notice how when the facts that dogs kill 20-30 peolpe a year and that feral cats are the biggest invasive species since man are mentioned they shut up and the best they can reply with is good snake/dead snake)...those people are doggie and kittie owners who will NEVER understand us because they simply do not want to...I appreciate evey thing USARK has done but its just like sticking your finger in the crack of the dam while its falling apart...we need a miracle...

As Mark Twain said:

“All generalizations are false, including this one.”

If you resent being lumped together with certain people, then make an effort not to lump certain people together.

...they started it...do unto others right?...wouldnt expect you to understand, after all there is a huge difference in the public perception between a person who keeps turtles and people who keep large snakes (or any kind of snake for that matter...no disrespect intended to you of course....

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you...

StephF May 20, 2010 12:17 PM

It's classier, more dignified and more mature to refrain from resorting to the same level of categorizing and/or name calling.

Rise above it. You might be pleasantly surprised and find that others treat you with more respect.

mavericksdad May 21, 2010 08:25 AM

...in other words turn the other cheek right?...thats what we've all been doing andlook were its gotten us...you might be able to pull your limbs inside your shell and hope this passes over but I choose to stand up for myself (and others)...Im really tired of this "be polite" "be nice" "be respectful" nonsense its done us no good its time we started fighting back and fighting back hard!

It IS possible to fight back hard in a polite, rational, and respectful manner. One way that you do it is by calmly providing FACTS, and by expecting the same from the opposition.

There's no sense in continuing to bash the owners of *certain kinds of pets*, when the issue is that certain kinds of pet *owners*: i.e. the irresponsible ones, that give the rest a bad reputation, and who are invariably the ones who make the headlines.

It's useful to remind the public that irresponsible pet owners are typically the minority.

Jaykis May 18, 2010 01:07 PM

Actually, I don't see feral cats as an "invasive" species.

My pet peeve is always the word "infested", as "alligator infested", or "shark infested". No one ever uses the term "human infested", which is more appropriate.

I have been an advocate of self-regulating, ethics reform, SOP's, Quality guidelines for well over 10 years. I am seeing progress. We are getting there.
This horse is finally taking a drink.

I always cringe when I see a snake person walking around with their "pet" hanging around their neck. This even applies to reptile shows.

StephF May 18, 2010 01:51 PM

Basically in agreement...bad actors get all the headlines: maybe the rest of us should remind the public at large that the really bad owners are the minority.

Could not agree more. Said it so many times -- such a shame when we have all the opportunity in the world to be informed and educated on issues and we choose ignorance over enlightenment. It is nothing more than mental/intellectual sloth...Soundbite mentality.

...I read an assortment of foreign newspapers online, sometimes even to find out what's going on *here*.

I feel fortunate to have spent some years abroad, and to have friends in different parts of the world. Just found video for one old classmate's TED talk.

Jaykis May 18, 2010 03:20 PM

TED has always been a free-thinking website. OT, I was in Australia in 1996 during the Olympics. What was broadcast FROM our news sites to other countries was totally different than what was seen here. And on a painful note, when I worked at the local CBS affiliate, I was told by one writer that they were instructed to write on an 8th grade level for the viewing audience.

>>...was reading a post on here suggesting that we need to band together with the dog and cat owners...well that will never happen why?...most dog and cat owners are anti-snake ownership and mostly adhere to the good snake/dead snake BS...

Actually there are many key points when dealing with dog and cat owners. When the last letter writing campaign occurred, I set myself up with 100 letter for each WI rep at Petco. I stood there with 3 clip boards and nothing else. I had 3 reptile people sign, a few bird folks (and people bird folks are who we need to partner with!) and the rest were dog or cat people. Dog or cat people who knew NOTHING about the law, dog or cat people who are afraid of snakes.

Key points -
It helps if you have a basic BSL knowledge. BSL is breed specific legislation. BSL can target ANYTHING. For info on this check out some of the more well known APBT folks at BAD RAP, Understand-a-bull and PBRC. This will help you with the next steps.

Site facts such as PETA is on a mission to require all dogs (and specifically starting by targeting certain breeds) be altered. When people mention this is a good idea, less animals in shelters, explain what this means is if mandtory S/N will wipe out the pet population completely. The fact that PETA is targeting certain breeds for extinction is step one in eradicating the domestic pet.

Point out how laws snow ball. Explain that there are locations, because of support of this organizations, that dogs are banned over certain sizes (most common is 50lbs). This targets above breed. This targets lab, beagle, poodle, mixed breeds and more owners. Not just those "terrible" Pit bulls, dobes, rotties, etc...

Learn about Alley Cat Allies. While many folks do not like feral cats, the fact that there are groups out there that work to maintain colonies and provide spay neuter to help prevent future breedings is a talking point for cat owners. AR groups want these cats dead. Point out that many farmers use cats regularly and the fact that setting up a MANAGED feral colony for these folks help with controlling infestations of rodents. That these groups work to ensure future breedings are stopped, but also utilize a wide network of approved homes to properly MANAGE these populations to prevent the KILLING of animals. (note key words)

Hope these hints help. What I have found is using my knowledge on other programs can and do make it VERY easy to segue into working with the other pet owners.

Target responsible ownership. Talk about why reptiles make good pets and ALSO be prepared to list some great FAMILY FRIENDLY pets.

Things to avoid -
All the money breeders loose, use it as all the money other people loose. Avoid mentioning breeders. Income from reptile sales is more than just the livestock. Remember that.

If snakes are outlawed only outlaws will keep them - These laws will require me to KILL my BELOVED family pet.

That's probably true, but we should be addressing ourselves to authorities/legislators, not our opponents. By calmly, rationally, FACTUALLY, and thoroughly debunking the strident & spurious claims made by our opponents, we stand a better chance, in my opinion.
