What to get??

cmac107 May 18, 2010 09:00 PM

Im new to ball pythons and want to start a nice breeding collection. I want to start out with the basic morphs, rather han spend tons of money that i dont have on the more complex morphs. So i have a normal male, pastel female, and pastel male. im going to a reptile show in june and am looking to get 2 more females to breed to my male pastel. i have a 700 dollar budget. so i guess my question is what other 2 females would you pair with a male pastel? (Given my budget) Thanks!

How about a Spider,a Lesser,a Fire, a Cinnamon. I think any 2 of these females would put you at your $700 or under. With the male and female Pastels you can make more Pastels and hopefully a Super Pastel, Using your male Pastel to a Spider will give you a Spider, a Pastel,a Normal and if the Odds gods are smiling on you a BumbleBee. Using him to a Lesser will let you make Lesser Pastels besides Pastels and Lessers ,a Fire will let you make Fires, Pastels and FireFlies, the Cinny will let you make Cinnies, Pastels and Pewters and a Normal or two thrown into each of these possible baby groups.. I am sure you will get many different answers about what 2 female Morphs to pick up. Remember those are all Codom gene Morphs, well excluding the Spider and if you happened to pick up a recessive Morph such as a Clown or in this case a het Clown, an Albino, a Pied or Het Pied that type of thing you are looking at several years to make the recessives. Just stick with the simple Dom and Codoms right now for what you are looking to do. Oh, one other thing that I learned the hard way. Buy your female Morphs and start growing them up now. If they are babies you can wait almost 2 yrs before buying any males should you decide to get some males in the future. I bought males and females from the git go and you dont need to be feeding males for 2 or 3 yrs while you are waiting on your females to grow up. Males mature sexually in about a year give or take a bit and it takes females nearly 3 yrs to reach breeding size and sexual maturity. Now here is another cheap way to get a jump on some babies. Buy 2 or 3 breeding size female normals that you can put your male Pastel to next year. They are cheap, usually about $100 or so each plus shipping and that way you can be on your way to making your own Pastels while you are waiting on your newly bought females to get up to size. Good luck, Jay

Female spider and a female cinny.
You could probably get both for $700 at a show if you haggle.

Then you have the option of pewters and bumblebees.
Both are excellent.

Just a tip though...I wouldn't breed the normal male to any of the morph females. Kind've a waste of a morph female in my opinion, especially when you have the pastel male.

Absolutly, See if you can find a nice kid down the street to give your Normal male to unless he means something to you such as having been your first Ball. Dont let him near your females, Morphs or Normals if you decide on getting some Normal females down the road.. I have 3 Normal males, one is my sons which started this whole addictive Ball thing for me, one came as part of a package deal which was suppose to be a female and the last one I took from a guy just to save it from starving to death.. Normal females can be good for you to help build up your numbers when you breed the Morph males to the Morph or Normal females but like he said just dont use your Normal male because it would just be a total waste of a breeding cycle on one of your females.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts. I think im leaning towards a cinny, mojave, and pinstripe. And there's no way i would stick the normal male with any of my females. The normal is really my wifes snake an the snake that got me and her addicted to ball pythons.

I totally agree with the previous posts! But don't forget pinstripe and mojave females! Blasts & Pastaves rock and have endless potential in future combos! The list of your options are endless, but given the combos being produced with the morphs we have named you should see nice rewards!

Best Wishes!

A $700 budget, you can get more than 2 for that price easily. In fact I'd bet with cash in hand you could easily pick up 3 morph females and possible 4 if you look for the right ones. Shoot me an email and I can aim you in the right direction if you want.
