RE- Oder control

peters May 19, 2010 02:22 PM

The earlier thread about snake room oders being offensive to us brought to mind a question from the other side of the coin. Has anyone ever found out whether tobacco smoke has any effect on reptiles or amphibians? I presume some of you herpers out there are smokers as I am.-----theOLDherper---'Pete'

I lost an african bullfrog after a house fire...and a man I knew that raised dart frogs (mostly azures) lost his after a fire, he thought from smoke inhalation. I'd guess their skin makes them a lot more susceptible to any toxic fumes...don't know about the snakes though.

Hey Pete, I would assume like any organism, anything can be considered toxic in appropriate quantities, even water. As far as how much second smoke it would take to have a toxic effect on snakes, shrug?? I guess its just prudent not to do it. I smoked in my herp room when it was outside in my carport storage area. Now that its inside my house I do not as I do not smoke in the house PERIOD!! That makes me wonder with all the application of herbicides, pesticides, etc. that these animals are potentially subject to in their habitats, exactly what effect is that having upon them?

From a smoker, who smokes OUTSIDE the house, the same ill health effects have been reported in dogs and cats, which would lead me to believe they would be present on reptiles as well.

I had at one time a story about nicotine poisoning on a baby python, so I also take extra care to wash hands very well before entering my room and cages, of course washing between cages for cross contamination
